Position Overview

The matting/framing position is an integral part of the exhibitions department at the Spencer Museum of Art. This individual is responsible for key steps in the process of preparing two dimensional art, primarily works on paper, for exhibition and storage. This position is supervised by the Exhibition Designer but works closely with curators, registrar, exhibit technician and interns. A security background check is required prior to appointment to this position.

Job Description

20% Mat and frame art to meet exhibition deadlines
20 % Remove art from frames after exhibition and notify curatorial assistant for proper storage of art
15% Restock frame components such as frame bars, hardware, Plexiglas, backer board
15% Re-hinge and re-mat designated art from the permanent collection.
10% Mount and trim exhibition labels
5% Assist with exhibit designer and exhibit technician with exhibition installation
5% Maintain inventory of supplies for the matting/framing position
5% Maintain the physical workspace
4% Participate in appropriate cleaning practices as they apply to collection storage areas and exhibition spaces
1% Utilize Museum Plus (Spencer Museum of Art data base) as needed

Required Qualifications

  1. One year of related experience or combination of education/experience
  2. Experience working with works of art on paper
  3. Proper art handling skills as evidenced by education/experience
  4. Experience which demonstrates sense of quality and craft for handling valuable objects of art
  5. Experience with mat cutting and framing techniques

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience with wheat paste and rice paper hinging
  2. Experience which demonstrates respect for security procedures and practices
  3. General familiarity with basic conservation methods and materials
  4. Familiarity with Microsoft Office
