Position Overview

The KU Max Kade Center Collections Preservation intern will clean, record, and individually wrap 18th- and 19th-century books in the Milwaukee Turner Library.

Job Description

The Max Kade Center seeks an enthusiastic and hard-working intern for spring semester 2022 who will gain real-world professional experience cleaning, removing post-it notes, recording, and wrapping in archival paper approximately 280 books in the Milwaukee Turnverein Library that exhibit the type of leather deterioration known as red rot.
The Milwaukee Turnverein was a gymnastics and social organization established by German immigrants in the mid-nineteenth century.

  • Remove post-it notes from each volume
  • Clean volumes with vacuum cleaner
  • Clean bookcase shelves
  • Wrap each volume in archival paper and tie with cotton string
  • Measure dimensions of volumes to determine size of paper and length of string needed
  • Record author and title of each volume on spine of book using a micron pen
  • Adherence to safety precautions for working with dusty books afflicted with red rot, including wearing goggles, nitrile gloves, an N95 mask, and a lab coat

Required Qualifications

  • Familiarity with techniques for handling old and fragile books
  • Familiarity with techniques for cleaning and wrapping old and fragile books (demonstration of workflow will be provided)
  • Willingness to learn how to read Fraktur typeface (charts will be provided)
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong attention to procedure
  • Ability to climb step ladder to reach volumes on upper shelves if necessary
  • Professional interaction with individuals involved with project
  • During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience handling and caring for old and fragile books
  • Background or interest in working with historical collections
  • Ability to work independently, under supervision of MKC director and in consultation with Museum Studies faculty and/or KU Librarians
  • Reading knowledge of German
  • Interest in German immigrant and/or book history
