Position Overview
The Kansas Biological Survey & Center for Ecological Research (KBS-CER) at the University of Kansas (KU) conducts basic and applied research that addresses state, regional, national, and global environmental issues. The research center employs >100 researchers in the fields of aquatic ecology, terrestrial ecology, remote sensing, and geographic information systems. The center also manages the KU Field Station, which consists of more than 3,700 acres over four sites in northeastern Kansas, and is the administrative home for Monarch Watch.
The KBS-CER is seeking an Office Assistant to be present in the front office. The Office Assistant position is involved with multiple administrative activities of the KBS-CER. The Office Assistant provides general assistance to the Business Coordinator, Facility Manager and Communications Coordinator.

Job Description
OFFICE OPERATIONS- 70%
FRONT OFFICE – 25%
OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED - 5%
- Assist KBS-CER Business Coordinator
- Manage hospitality needs
- Order office supplies
- Point of contact for faculty, staff, and students concerning unit operations
- Assist KBS-CER Facility Manager
- Track building keys
- KBS vehicle fleet care
- Issue visitor parking permits
- Log mailroom deliveries and notify recipients of packages
- Provide help with conference room and vehicle calendar scheduling
- Assist KBS-CER Communication Coordinator
- Manage department list serve and directory
- Gather and format research center annual report materials
- Distribute general announcements to distribution lists
FRONT OFFICE – 25%
- Serves as receptionist for guests/colleagues
- Answers the telephone and greets visitors to the office
- Monitor departmental email
- Schedule various Zoom meetings and invitations
OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED - 5%
- Other duties as assigned pertaining to office administration at the research center and KU Field Station
Position Requirements
This position is required to work on-site
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma/GED and one (1) year of office experience or one (1) year of post‐secondary education
- Proficiency with Windows/Microsoft Office computer software
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Experience working in a university research environment and/or academic setting
- Experience with KU online systems
- Familiarity with university policies and procedures
