Position Overview

The William Allen White School of Journalism & Mass Communications has an opening for a student assistant in the Resource Center. This is a front desk position and includes assisting with a variety of office duties.

Work Location: University of Kansas, Lawrence: Stauffer-Flint Hall

Job Description

The student assistant’s role is to provide excellent customer service to J-School students, faculty, staff, and visitors at the front desk. Student assistants accurately check out various types of equipment. Other duties include: greeting visitors and resolving and/or referring inquires, photocopying, sorting mail, answering phone calls, running errands, updating documents, checking inventory, stuffing envelopes, setting up for events, and other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  1. One or more years of experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  2. Able to commit to a set schedule and open to school’s need for occasional extra hours.
  3. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Preferred Qualifications

  1. One year of previous experience working in an office environment.
  2. Dependable, organized, detail oriented, demonstrates initiative, and has a positive attitude.
  3. Must have a good work ethic and be self-driven to complete tasks.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work collegially with others.
