Job Description

This position will serve as Student Leaders, during OPTIONS week. The program will take place from August 12 through August 16, 2018, and is a five-day residential program for 2018-2019 incoming freshman. The student leaders will mentor and guide students through sessions covering issues including:
  • Finding friends and making campus connections
  • Finding jobs on campus
  • Understanding scholarships, grants, and loans
  • How to succeed in classes
  • Using the “myKU” portal: how and why?
  • How to access and understand a “Degree Progress Report”
  • Preparing a graduation plan
  • Managing my money
Student Leaders will also serve as peer mentors throughout the 2018-2019 academic year. In this role SL’s will support students’ academic and social development by connecting students with resources and programs to enhance student learning. This allows students to combine the tutelage from both TRIO SES/STEM Student Success Specialist and SL’s in order to establish a foundation for a successful college career.

Required Qualifications

1. KU student must be enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours each semester during the academic year. Enrollment of one credit hour during the summer session is required if the student was not enrolled the previous spring or is not pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall term.
2. Must be classified as a sophomore or higher by hours and years of attendance by the summer of 2018 as evidenced in application materials.
3. Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 at time of application and throughout term of employment as evidenced in application materials.

3. Ability to relate well with students, faculty, and administrators
4. Demonstration of responsibility, positive attitude, confidence, flexibility, team orientation, strong interpersonal skills, and high energy
5. Desire to learn about KU academic resources, policies, procedures, initiatives, and communities

6. Work study eligible
7. Personal experience overcoming barriers faced by first generation and low income students
