Position Overview

The University of Kansas Schiefelbusch Institute for Life Span Studies is looking for a part-time (.50 FTE) Assistant Researcher to be a part of a five-year research project to examine the efficacy of an intervention to improve spoken word production in minimally verbal school-age children with autism spectrum disorder. We are seeking to hire a research assistant who will help deliver speech interventions to children with autism. Participants in this study are children ages 5-10 who receive special education services in the Kansas City area school districts. The position is contingent on satisfactory yearly employee evaluation and continued availability of grant funds. Daily travel of up to 60 miles to participating schools is required.

Job Description

  1. 40% - Provide interventions to children with autism between the ages of 5-10 who have minimal verbal skills.
  2. 20% - Collect data regarding intervention progress.
  3. 10% - Maintain fidelity of implementation and reliability standards as set by project coordinator
  4. 15% - Assist with standardized assessments of participants’ speech and language skills.
  5. 15% - Provide assistance with the coordination of data entry and verification.

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelors degree or higher in speech and hearing science or related field (special education, applied behavior science, psychology, etc.)
  2. Minimum of 1 year of experience working with individuals with autism
  3. Effective written and oral communication skills as evidenced by application materials, interview performance, and references
  4. Excellent organizational skills as evidenced by application materials

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Masters degree in Speech Language Pathology (or related field)
  2. Experience treating children with autism in school settings
  3. Experience conducting standardized assessments of language and cognitive development
  4. Experience with speech generating devices or other augmentative and alternative communication systems
  5. Experience working on an externally funded research grant
  6. Experience with computer software for data base management
  7. Experience working with diverse people in a variety of situations
  8. Ability to work independently and attend to details as demonstrated in work experience
