Job Description

This is a part-time position (not to exceed 30 hours per week but likely averaging about 20 hours per week). The ideal candidate will be available to work variable hours, dependent on research needs. The student will work closely with graduate students, staff and faculty at the Kansas Biological Survey to assist ecological research in the field of plant and microbial ecological interactions. The student will perform a variety of general laboratory, greenhouse and field work duties related to this field of study. Some of these tasks include, but are NOT limited to: setting up and monitoring greenhouse pot experiments; weeding plants and plant identification to the current description; non-destructive vegetation sampling in the field; general lab assays; data entry. Some day trip travel to remote field sites may be required.

Required Qualifications

  1. Interest in science (ecology/biology/evolution/microbes/botany);
  2. Ability to work outdoors and in greenhouse conditions for extended periods;
  3. Interest in Kansas native plants and ecosystems;
  4. Experience with Microsoft Excel;
  5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  6. Must meet minimum enrollment requirements to hold student hourly position;

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Course work in biology/ecology
  2. Experience working with Kansas prairie plants is a plus, but not required
