Position Overview

America Counts tutors provide personalized support to students in need of extra mathematics practice/instruction in the Lawrence Public Schools (USD 497) elementary sites designated as Title 1. To receive this designation at least 50% of a school's students must receive free or reduced lunch. Generally, the students receiving tutoring are in Kindergarten through grade five.

Job Description

Tutoring activities include, but are not limited to, working through math problems with students, explaining concepts, and facilitating activities to improve specific skills such as conservation of number and automaticity in mathematics. Tutors work with the elementary student's teacher to develop lesson plans or facilitate experiences that meet the needs of each student. Aside from tutoring, tutors should also seek to be positive role models providing students with the encouragement and support needed to improve each student's self confidence and interest in mathematics. To promote progress in mathematics, tutors keep a regular tutoring schedule with students and maintain consistent communication with teachers. You will also complete online database reports to facilitate communication among America Counts and USD 497 personnel.

Required Qualifications

1. Tutors MUST qualify for and accept Federal Work Study to become a tutor.
2. KU student must be enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours each semester during the academic year. Enrollment of one credit hour during the summer session is required if the student was not enrolled the previous spring or is not pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall term.
3. Tutors MUST have transportation to and from area schools - some schools are on the KU/Lawrence bus routes.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience with children in schools, camp, or other settings.
2. Interest and passion for working with children in Kindergarten through grade five.
3. Self-motivation and desire to go "above and beyond" to promote student learning.
4. Responsibility and personal accountability for completing tasks; attention to details and deadlines.
5. Elementary or Middle/Secondary Education major.
