Position Overview
*This is a POOL position to hire multiple Academic Advisors*
Applicants must be available Tuesday-Friday, five hours per day for a total of 20 hours per week. This position will receive paid training prior to the start of New Student Orientation (two-week period in late May, specific dates to come) and is expected to be available from June 6 – July 21, excluding July 3-7. Availability August 1-4 and August 14-18 is preferred, but not required.
The Temporary Academic Advisor position is a great way to get experience working in academic advising and support new students as they transition to college. It is an ideal position for anyone looking to build upon their advising skills, gain useful experience and contribute to undergraduate student retention.
Jayhawk Academic Advising (JAA) is a unit within Academic Success, reporting through the Office of the Provost. JAA provides comprehensive academic advising services for all undergraduate students at the University and graduate students in select programs. Our office is staffed by professional advisors, support staff, and graduate assistants.
The person in this position is responsible for knowledge of and compliance with Board of Regents and University policies regarding daily job-related activities applicable to the position.

Job Description
100% - Provide individual academic advising to new first-year students, in specific majors and programs.
- Advise students on the development and selection of course schedules consistent with students' educational goals.
- Provide outreach to students as needed in addition to providing appropriate follow-up and referral to University offices and resources.
- Provide advisement to all students as necessary including those that may not be assigned to the advisor.
- Provide academic advising for new freshmen during New Student Orientation and provide advising support for any undergraduate students as requested by JAA.
- Temporary advising efforts will be focused around a select number of majors or programs to meet the staffing needs of the unit and to provide support to the advisor.
Position Requirements
- This position requires working on-site.
Required Qualifications
1. Bachelor's degree PLUS one (1) year relevant experience such as academic advising, career counseling, or mentoring at a peer (student) or professional level.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in higher education, counseling, or related field.
- Demonstrated experience with relevant computerized student information and communication systems.
- Demonstrated strong verbal communication and organizational skills.
