Position Overview

This position is part of an existing collaborative research program to develop novel strategies for identifying which organizations are most critical for a community to remain functional during a natural hazard event, identifying and modeling minimum functionality for the critical organizations, and mapping dependencies, interdependencies and supply chain functions for critical organizations across a community. The individual filling this position will develop and carry out research related to this topic, and support the further growth of this research program through student mentoring, research proposal development and submission, and publication of results.

This postdoctoral research position will be in the Sutley Research Group for the period of January 20, 2020 – January 19, 2021.

Job Description

40% - Perform research for the purpose of enhancing and developing research competencies in relating organizational capacity to community resilience, including through the development of a network model with associated data collection. Participate in planning, designing and conducting highly technical and complex research projects under the direction of a supervisor. May or may not work independently.

30% - Contribute to the development of research documentation for publication and/or prepare technical reports, journal papers, and/or records.

10% - Contribute to the development, preparation and submission of externally funded proposals related to the research program.

10% - Search literature, utilizing all available resources, including electronic, regarding new methodologies for improved modeling community disaster resilience, and design models accordingly.

10% - Mentor undergraduate and graduate students.

Required Qualifications

  1. Ph.D. in civil/structural or systems engineering or discipline related to community resilience.
  2. Previous experience or coursework in the area of community disaster resilience
  3. Technical writing skills which would be applicable for producing publications in peer-reviewed journals
  4. Experience working independently and in a collaborative group environment

NOTE: To be appointed at the Postdoctoral Researcher title, it is necessary to have the PhD in hand. Appointments made without a diploma or certified transcript indicating an earned doctorate are conditional hires and are appointed on an acting basis not to exceed six months. Upon verification of degree the appointment will be extended to its full duration.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience with systems engineering approaches, including network modeling, agent based modeling, fault tree analysis, and/or optimization methods
  2. Publication record
  3. Knowledge of GIS Software
  4. Programming expertise in Python, R, or Matlab
  5. Excellent organizational skills
  6. Effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
