Position Overview

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Kansas seeks to fill a Postdoctoral Researcher position in experimental high energy nuclear physics, heavy-ion physics, working in the group of Professor Daniel Tapia Takaki.

Starting Date: July 1, 2021 or as soon thereafter as the position can be filled (also negotiable).

Length of Appointment: Initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of renewal annually for three subsequent years subject to review and continued grant funding.

General Duties: Research in Experimental High Energy Nuclear Physics. The successful candidate will contribute in several aspects of the experimental nuclear physics group's research program of Professor Daniel Tapia Takaki at the ALICE Collaboration at the CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, including detector design, development and operation, data analysis and event simulation, and publication of research results, and travel as required for work duties.

Job Description

Conduct research in experimental high energy nuclear physics in the group of Professor Daniel Tapia Takaki and collaboration members world-wide. This entails participation in relevant facets of the overall research endeavor encompassing the life-cycle of nuclear physics experiments, ranging from experimental design, feasibility studies, detector prototyping, detector R&D, detector construction, detector operation, data-taking support, detector calibration and alignment, detector modeling, detector simulation, physics event simulation, event reconstruction, data analysis, software development, publication preparation, grant proposal preparation, editorial work, presentation of results, outreach and career development, and travel as required for work duties.

Specific Job Duties (percentage of time)

50% Physics analysis of the ALICE data. Development of new techniques applicable to physics analysis. Documentation, presentation and publication of research results.

40% Appropriate contributions to the group's responsibilities and detector projects in the ALICE experiment.

10% Assist the faculty in guiding the group's graduate and undergraduate students.

Required Qualifications

Evaluation of the required qualification and preferred qualification will be made through (1) records of accomplishments entered in CV, (2) description of research and education experience provided in the application materials, (3) references, and (4) publications as appropriate.
  1. A Ph.D. in physics by date of appointment

NOTE: To be appointed at the Postdoctoral Researcher title, it is necessary to have the PhD in hand. Appointments made without a diploma or certified transcript indicating an earned doctorate are conditional hires and are appointed on an acting basis not to exceed 6 months.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Completion of Ph.D. within the last four years.
  2. Experience in experimental particle or nuclear physics or related experimental field.
  3. Experience in experimental techniques and software relevant to collider experiments.
  4. Experience and ability in particle physics data analysis.
  5. Experience and ability with particle detector design, development and operation.
  6. Good communication skills.
