Position Overview

The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering at the University of Kansas invites applications for two full-time Postdoctoral Research Associates to support research on repairing/retrofitting reinforced concrete structures with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) materials.

Highly qualified candidates with any of the following experience are particularly encouraged to apply:
  • Small- and large-scale testing; including design of experimental programs and test setups, conducting testing, as well as data analysis, interpretation, and reporting.
  • Reinforced concrete behavior and modeling.
  • Applications of fiber-reinforced polymer materials to reinforced concrete structures.
  • Materials characterization and testing.
The positions consist of a 1-yr appointment with the possibility of reappointment based on performance and funding availability. The preferred start will be on or before March 1, 2023, but a later start date may be negotiable. These positions involve working closely with faculty members and students on high-profile research projects. It is anticipated that the selected individuals will be involved with multiple tasks within a large project, with the potential to contribute to a diverse set of journal publications.

Job Description

80% - Research
  • Conduct and oversee laboratory and/or computational research.
  • Supervise graduate and undergraduate students with their research.
  • Train students on proper procedures and safety regulations for the laboratory.
  • Analyze and interpret data associated with conducted research.
20% - Reporting and Dissemination of Research
  • Prepare and present updates on ongoing research to the research team and sponsors.
  • Provide written reports on research progress.
  • Prepare manuscripts for submission to top-tier journals.
  • Participate in group meetings and present seminars to scientific community.

Position Requirements

  • Postdoctoral Research Associates must be able to relocate to Lawrence, KS and work on-site at the University of Kansas.
  • Some out-of-state travel may be required to conduct field work as necessary; travel is anticipated to be less than 2 weeks per year.

Required Qualifications

Candidates will be evaluated on their research experience and communication skills, as evidenced by (i) CV and cover letter, (ii) statement of research experience and interests, (iii) prior research publications and/or patent applications, (iv) references, and (v) interview by videoconference.
  1. Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline.
NOTE: To be appointed at the Postdoctoral Researcher title, it is necessary to have the Ph.D. conferred at the time of hire. Appointments made without a diploma or certified transcript indicating an earned doctorate are conditional hires and are appointed on an acting basis not to exceed six months. Upon verification of degree, the appointment will be extended to its full duration.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience with design of laboratory test setups.
  2. Experience with laboratory testing of structural components and systems.
  3. Experience interpreting reinforced concrete behavior or modeling of reinforced concrete members.
  4. Experience in fiber-reinforced polymers and their application to reinforced concrete.
  5. Robust record of publications and technical presentations.
