Position Overview

Undergraduate research assistant to help research in spatial data management and data conflation.

Job Description

This position involves using geographic information systems to solve the problem of conflating spatial datasets such as road networks from different agencies and data sources. One of the main challenges is to train computer algorithms to match objects in datasets. The research assistant will be responsible for visual interpretation of the datasets using the provided software tools, creating data tables describing the match relationship between features (e.g. roads) as well as data work such as data cleaning and verification with Internet maps. The research assistant is also expected to work with other team members on using the produced results to train computer algorithms to do the work.

Required Qualifications

  1. Familiarity with Windows operating system and Microsoft Office, as evident on application material.
  2. Undergraduate courses in mathematics such as Calculus I/II.
  3. Willingness to learn and work with new software and open source technology such as QGIS, as evident on application material.
  4. Effective communication skills, as evident on application material.
