Position Overview

The Student Involvement and Leadership Center (SILC) at the University of Kansas provides impactful co-curricular experiences through educational, social, and community-building programs and events. We engage in each student's leadership development by providing mentorship, resources, and involvement opportunities. SILC is responsible for coordinating registered student organizations, providing leadership education experiences for students, and providing development programs and services to specific target populations including student organization members and non-traditional students.

The Student Engagement Coordinator position is integral to SILC’s student engagement initiatives, as the primary leader of student organization workshops and programming. The Coordinator will be responsible for the development, implementation, and assessment of educational and experiential programs and will serve a portfolio of 500 registered student organizations at the University of Kansas. The Coordinator will directly supervise the undergraduate SILC Peer Outreach Team (SPOT) members, and provide supplemental supervision to graduate assistants as needed. The Coordinator will demonstrate support for a diverse, equitable, and inclusive student engagement community.

Job Description

Program Development 35%
  • Design and implement comprehensive student organization support programs and leadership development programs for a diverse portfolio of 500 registered student organizations.
  • Develop and maintain student involvement surveys.
  • Coordinate and implement existing student organization training and support programs, including annual Student Organization Training and the SILC Workshop Series.
  • Assist in planning and implementation of SILC’s largest programming events, including the SILC Involvement Fairs, Nontraditional Student Week, KU Quest, Big Jay’s Recess, and the Rock Chalk Recognition Awards.
  • Cultivate and maintain collaborative relationships with student organization advisors and campus partners in order to support the roles and responsibilities of advising and working with student organizations.

Policies/Procedures 15%
  • Assist in the development and implementation of institutional policies related to student organizations.
  • Development and implementation of online manuals related to student organizations and leadership skills including registration processes, financial and funding procedures, recognition process and advisor resource materials, to ensure compliance with university policies and procedures.
  • Oversee a comprehensive annual student organization registration process.
  • Oversee the Event Submission and approval process via Rock Chalk Central.
  • Collaborate with staff to create clear and timely communications and web presence for the KU student organization community regarding resources and policies.
  • Ensures student organization support programs and leadership programs are effectively coordinated and managed to maximize student learning and development as outlined in CAS (Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education).

Advising/Supervising 20%
  • Supervise and provide leadership, direction, training, and support for the undergraduate SILC Peer Outreach Team (SPOT) members.
  • Provide supplemental supervision to graduate assistants as needed.
  • Advise and support a diverse portfolio of student organizations, including advising student groups and leaders in organizational development, program development, development of policies and procedures, officer training and transition, and financial management.
  • Serve as support liaison to the KU Religious Advisors (KURA).
  • Provide consultation to students seeking to get involved in student organizations.

Assessment and Administration 15%
  • Assist in the development of tools for assessing student organization needs, measuring the achievement of student learning outcomes, and ensuring high quality programming.
  • Design and/or supervise the creation of promotional materials for branding and advertising, including social media posts, email marketing, press releases and other publications.
  • Help manage the administrative and communication functions of Rock Chalk Central, KU’s student organization database and platform.
  • Management of the allocation process for student organization office space and storage space.
  • Participate in University related committees.

SILC Responsibilities 15%
  • Assist in long-range planning of SILC student engagement initiatives and assist in the overall daily operations of the Student Involvement and Leadership Center.
  • Serve on internal SILC committees.
  • Serve as a student engagement support specialist; attending recruitment fairs, pipeline programming, and other marketing events to further SILC’s outreach efforts.
  • Other duties as assigned by SILC Director.

Position Requirements

  1. This position requires working on-site.
  2. This position requires some evening and weekend work.

Required Qualifications

  1. Master's degree in Higher Education/Student Personnel, Social Work, Counseling, or a related field; OR a Bachelor's degree plus three years of related experience at time of hire.
  2. Minimum one year of experience working with college students through programs and services. Two (2) years working as a Graduate Assistant will count towards one (1) year of professional work.
  3. Experience developing and presenting programs, workshops, and/or educational materials.
  4. Strong written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.
  5. Experience using the Microsoft Office suite.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Three (3) to five (5) years of related experience in student organizations and/or student engagement programs.
  2. Three (3) to five (5) years strategic development and project management, with the ability to manage details of multiple projects within firm schedules.
  3. Knowledge of current issues in higher education, risk management policies and procedures, and student development and other theoretical frameworks.
  4. Exceptional leadership, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  5. Experience supervising student staff.
  6. Fundamental understanding of social justice and principles of equity and inclusion.
  7. Knowledge of policies and procedures of a large university.
  8. Experience utilizing social media.

Advertised Salary Range

Minimum $41,299, commensurate with experience

Work Schedule

Monday-Friday, 8 am to 5 pm. Weekend work hours also required.
