Position Overview

Alternative Breaks provides immersive volunteer experiences that educate students and foster a lifelong commitment to service. These opportunities address pressing issues and facilitate change in personal perspectives through education, direct service, and reflection. Two Alternative Breaks Co-Directors work together to oversee various aspects of AB programming, planning, and administration. The listed responsibilities listed below are equitably divided based on the strengths of each Co-Director:
  • Advising Winter and Spring Coordinators
  • Overseeing Public Relations, Education, Social Media and Design Coordinators
  • Overseeing Fundraising, Finance and Accounting, and Core Development Coordinators

Co-Directors must make themselves available to one another and their AB Coordinators during the upcoming academic year 2023-2024. This position is hourly at $10/hour with a maximum of 20 hours/week.

Job Description

  • Serve as the point of contact for Coordinators, faculty advisors, AB participants, and various partnerships across campus (CSL, Departmental Deans, Student Senate, etc.).
  • Overseeing programming, answering questions and offering support, and meeting regularly with Coordinators, advisors, and campus partners.
  • Act as not only a leader, but a role model as they guide Coordinators in their service to AB.
  • Co-Directors will share responsibilities in facilitating Core training, leading regular Core meetings, and supporting Coordinators.
  • During week-long programs, Co-Directors must attend pre-break classes on Thursday evenings, and must always be available during the Winter and Spring Breaks.
  • The Co-Director who oversees Weeklong Breaks will serve as the liaison for the UNIV 492 course, providing information to the CSL staff member teaching the course.
  • The Co-Director who oversees AB finances will work closely with the Finance, Accounting, and Fundraising Coordinators to ensure that our operating costs are as low as possible, in order to increase AB’s accessibility to all KU students, regardless of socioeconomic status. They will also oversee the scholarship fundraising and award process in partnership with the other Co-Director. The Co-Director in charge of finances must also work to secure funds from Student Senate at the beginning of the new fiscal cycle.
  • New Co-Directors will assist the outgoing Co-Directors in facilitating Core interviews, selection, and new Coordinator training.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours at The University of Kansas.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Leadership experience in the context of campus affiliated organizations or the workplace.
  • Previous experience as a Core Member of KU Alternative Breaks.
