Position Overview

The Student Involvement and Leadership Center (SILC) at the University of Kansas provides impactful co-curricular experiences through educational, social, and community-building programs and events. We engage in each student's leadership development by providing mentorship, resources, and involvement opportunities. SILC is responsible for coordinating registered student organizations, providing leadership education experiences for students, and providing development programs and services to specific target populations including Student Senate, student organization members, and non-traditional students.

The Student Senate Coordinator position is integral to SILC’s student engagement initiatives, serving as the primary advisor to Student Senate and providing direct support to student organizations funded by Student Senate. The Student Senate is the student component of University Governance, which works to address and develop lasting solutions to issues facing the student body. The Coordinator will be responsible for advising Student Senate to ensure continuity of operations, and assessing the level of student organization satisfaction with the Student Senate funding process. The Coordinator will work directly with the Student Senate Treasurer, the Shared Service Center, and the Budget Management team. Reporting to the SILC Director, the Coordinator will demonstrate support for a diverse, equitable, and inclusive student engagement community.

Job Description

Advising/Supervising 55%
  • Cultivate and maintain collaborative relationships with student organization leaders, advisors and campus partners in order to support the roles and responsibilities of advising Student Senate and working with student organizations.
  • Collaborates with other Student Senate advisors, attends Student Senate meetings, and advises Student Senate committees.
  • Serve as an ex-officio and non-voting member of the Student Senate to assist with Roberts Rules and advising on policies and procedures around funding processes.
  • Advise Student Senate and student organization leaders in program planning, event logistics, and financial management.
  • Advises the Equal Opportunity Fund (EOF) Board and provides oversight for the funding process administered on a yearly basis.
  • Assist with Student Senate Elections, both fall and spring, as needed.
  • Provide guidance to Student Senate leadership during the post-election transition process; assisting with personnel interview preparation, participating in interviews as an advisor, and providing consultation on Student Senate Executive Board selection.
  • Assist each new Student Senate administration in understanding each of the various staffing roles to better facilitate the continuity of Student Senate operations.
  • Works with assigned SSC HR Specialist for hiring process for all Student Senate funded student employees.
  • Coordinate annual professional development trainings for all Student Senate staff and senators.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of Student Senate policies and procedures.
  • Confirm event submission and approval via Rock Chalk Central for student organization events seeking funding from Student Senate.
  • Assist Student Senate in crafting clear and timely communications and web presence for the KU student community regarding resources and policies.
  • Supervises Student Senate payroll.
  • Provides phone and email support.
Financial Management and Administration 25%
  • Works with the Shared Service Center to process financial transactions (purchases orders, contractual services forms, W-9s, travel paperwork, P-card use & reconciliation, etc.) in conjunction with the Student Senate Treasurer for Student Senate, Center for Community Outreach, Alternative Breaks, and student organizations funded through Student Senate.
  • Works with assigned SSC Accounting Specialist to purchase office equipment and supplies using state guidelines.
  • Advises the Student Senate Treasurer in their vetting of funding requests.
  • Assists student organizations and vendors in preparing the paperwork needed for these financial transactions, solving any corresponding issues, and then making the purchases or payments.
  • Develop and implement tools for assessing student organization satisfaction with Student Senate and the Student Senate funding process.

SILC Responsibilities 20%
  • Assist in long-range planning of SILC student engagement initiatives and assist in the overall daily operations of the Student Involvement and Leadership Center and Student Senate Office.
  • Participate in University-related and internal SILC committees.
  • Serve as a student engagement support specialist; attending recruitment fairs, pipeline programming, and other marketing events to further Student Senate/SILC’s outreach efforts.
  • Other duties as assigned by SILC Director.

Position Requirements

  1. This position requires working on-site.
  2. This position requires some evening and weekend work.

Required Qualifications

  1. Master's degree in Higher Education/Student Personnel, Social Work, Counseling, or a related field at time of hire OR a Bachelor's degree plus three years of related experience at time of hire.
  2. Minimum one year* of professional work experience working with college students through programs and services. *Two years working as a Graduate Assistant will count towards one year of professional work experience.
  3. Strong written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.
  4. Experience using the Microsoft Office suite.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience with financial accounting or processing financial transactions.
  2. Experience developing and presenting programs, workshops, and/or educational materials.
  3. Knowledge of current issues in higher education, risk management policies and procedures, and student development and other theoretical frameworks.
  4. Exceptional organizational and problem-solving skills.
  5. Experience supervising student staff.
  6. Fundamental understanding of social justice and principles of equity and inclusion.
  7. Knowledge of policies and procedures of a large university.
  8. Experience utilizing social media.

Advertised Salary Range

Minimum $41,299, commensurate with experience

Work Schedule

Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Occasional evening and weekend hours required.
