Position Overview

The KU Center for Environmentally Beneficial Catalysis (CEBC) is currently accepting applications for a two-year Research/Teaching Postdoctoral Fellowship. Unlike postdoctoral positions that focus almost exclusively on research, this Fellowship is structured to prepare the Postdoctoral Fellow with the broader skill sets required for an academic career path, including both research and teaching in a balanced way. It is also expected that the Fellow will be committed to increasing diversity in academia in the chemical sciences.

During the first year, the Fellow will focus on expanding their research skills (~75%), while working alongside CEBC faculty and staff to assist with course development, professional development and outreach activities (~25%).

In the second year, the Fellow will continue research (~50%) but will expand teaching and mentoring experiences, with opportunities to guest lecture or co-teach in courses taught by CEBC faculty (~50%).

For this position, potential research topics include the following:
  1. Reaction engineering, including detailed modeling and experimental characterization of novel reactor designs, multi-phase catalytic systems, and complex reaction kinetics;
  2. Design, synthesis, and characterization of homogeneous, heterogeneous, or enzymatic catalysts for a wide variety of chemistries;
  3. Advanced spectroscopic measurements and surface science, including development of in situ or operando experiments;
  4. Theoretical chemistry and molecular modeling of reaction mechanisms, condensed phases, or novel porous materials;
  5. Engineering tunable solvents (e.g., supercritical fluids, gas-expanded liquids, and ionic liquids) as reaction media or for energy-efficient separations;
  6. Design and evaluation of chemical processes, including plant-scale simulations (Aspen/HYSYS), and environmental sustainability assessments (LCA)

Ideal candidates will have experience in one or more of these areas, and will be able to effectively collaborate with team members working in the other topical areas.

Job Description

40% - Conduct research in one of the topical areas mentioned above.

35% - Under CEBC faculty mentorship, develop and teach or co-teach course(s) at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels.

10% - Actively engage in interdisciplinary collaborations as warranted by the chosen research project. Provide mentoring for graduate and undergraduate students, and other postdoctoral researchers as needed.

10% - Participate in CEBC’s Lab Safety program; diversity equity and inclusion initiatives; professional development; and educational outreach activities.

5% - Publish and report the results of CEBC research in peer-reviewed journals and at professional meetings, protecting any intellectual property stemming from research

Required Qualifications

Candidates will be evaluated on the candidate’s research experience and communication skills, as evidenced by (i) a resume and cover letter, (ii) prior research publications and/or patent applications, (iii) references, and (iv) interview.
  1. Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or closely related discipline
  2. Research experience in one or more of the listed topical areas, as demonstrated through conference presentations, publications, or patent applications
  3. Demonstrated commitment, through lived experience or documented activities, to enhancing diversity in STEM fields in academia
  4. Effective written and oral communication skills, as demonstrated by application materials and interview

NOTE: To be appointed at the Postdoctoral Researcher title, it is necessary to have the PhD in hand. Appointments made without a diploma or certified transcript indicating an earned doctorate are conditional hires and are appointed on an interim basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion activities
  2. Demonstrated research accomplishments in at least one area among green chemistry and engineering, renewable monomer synthesis and plastics deconstruction
