Position Overview

Accessible Teaching, Learning and Assessment Systems (ATLAS), a research center at the University of Kansas, is seeking a test development specialist for its Science content team. ATLAS creates accessible and academically rigorous technology-based learning and assessment systems to serve students with disabilities, struggling learners, and teachers based on learning map models. A primary project is the Dynamic Learning Maps Alternate Assessment System, which delivers online, map-based assessments for students with disabilities in more than 18 states in English language arts, mathematics and science.

Test development specialists will support the production of operational assessments by assisting with test development efforts, including item development, internal and external review, and quality assurance. Test development specialists will help with the workflow of content at multiple stages of the development process and designing and delivering training to item writers, internal staff, and external reviewers. Test development specialists will contribute to documentation about test development processes, training plans, and instructional supports. Successful applicants should have experience with one or more of the following: science education, special education, and/or test development.  

This is a full-time (40 hours/week), unclassified position at the Lawrence campus, with occasional off-site meetings.

Job Description

60% - Assist with test development efforts, including item development, internal and external review, and quality assurance while under the supervision of test development coordinator. Activities include assisting with managing staff on the team, assisting with managing workflow for content at multiple stages of the development process, and assisting with designing and delivering training to item writers, internal staff and external reviewers. Be willing to learn and stay current on processes for all development steps.
20% - Assist with document preparation and organization about test development processes for technical and non-technical audiences. Activities include contributing to training plans, technical and non-technical reports, and instructional supports.
20% - Assist with coordinating and contributing to work with the English language arts and mathematics test development teams, the implementation team, the research team, and the test production team. Activities include coordinating resource allocation and timelines for deliverables and attending regular staff meetings.

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree or 1 year of teaching, large-scale assessment, or curriculum development experience in science education, special education, and/or related field
  2. At least one year of experience using technology including Microsoft Office products, Skype, and/or other web-based systems as evidenced in application materials
  3. Work experience that required organizational skills.
  4. Excellent attention to detail in written work as evidenced in application materials
  5. Experience that required working both independently and as part of a team in a collaborative environment
  6. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English as evidenced by application materials and interview
  7. Experience working in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Qualifications

  1. At least one full year of prior teaching experience in science, or special education, especially with students with significant cognitive disabilities
  2. ​Prior experience with test development, especially alternate assessment as evidenced by application materials and interview
  3. Experience with content management systems or quality control procedures
  4. Prior experience with coordinating projects as evidenced by application materials and interview
  5. Ability to make informed decisions, troubleshoot problems, and recommend solutions
  6. Flexibility and willingness to work in a fast-paced environment as evidenced in prior work experience and interview process
