Position Overview

The Undergraduate Geology program is accepting applications for undergraduate Learning Assistants (LAs) to assist with various Geology classes. Courses are redesigned around a student-centered approach to learning as part of the CLAS Course Redesign Initiative.

Job Description

Learning Assistant duties may include, but are not limited to, serving as peer mentors in and out of class to facilitate student engagement and concept mastery, assisting faculty with development of activities, grading and evaluation of student assignments, creating online study and practice tools, and leading study sessions. All Learning Assistants hired for these positions will be required to attend weekly course meetings and take part in regular teaching workshops before and throughout the semester. Applicants must have a demonstrated interest in geology.

Required Qualifications

  1. Applicants must have a 3.25 overall GPA
  2. Applicants must demonstrate a basic level of experience with and interest in evidence-based teaching methods as evidenced in application materials.
  3. Current KU student. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Geology majors or minors, UKanTeach students, previous UTAs in geology, and previous geology students with excellent outcomes will receive first consideration

This is a pool position, so hiring and start dates will be ongoing as needed.

Student Appointments

Student appointments may be either undergraduate or graduate students. Exceptions to the minimum enrollment requirements that are granted for GTA/GRA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to student hourly appointments.

During the semester term of the student hourly appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours.

For summer periods the student must:
1. have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester, or
2. be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours, or
3. be enrolled in summer session, or
4. be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester
