Position Overview

The Undergraduate Student Researcher position will be for the Summer period, with possible continuation into future semesters, depending on funding and progress made by the student. Consideration will be given for continuing this appointment at the end of each semester, by the supervisor.

We will select students based on their academic major, academic performance at KU, employment and research experience, language skills, and the results of an interview.

Job Description

The Kansas University High Energy Physics (KUHEP) group, with support from the National Science Foundation, is seeking outstanding KU undergraduate students for research experiences. The student(s) would participate in research projects in collaboration with the KUHEP group and other US and international physicists on the CMS experiment at CERN, the European laboratory for particle physics, in Geneva, Switzerland. The CMS experiment involves a large multi-purpose detector for the observing the collisions of protons and ions at the Large Hadron Collider. The research projects include: preparing physics outreach materials, addressing issues with the use of semiconductor pixel detectors, calibration and monitoring of the tracking detector, and analysis of data taken with the detector.

Required Qualifications

  1. Must have completed PHSX 111 or above coursework
  2. GPA of 3.0 or better
  3. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must:
    • have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or
    • be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or
    • be enrolled in summer session or
    • be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Physics or Engineering major are preferred, but highly motivated students with other majors are also encouraged to apply.
  2. Research experience
  3. Good language skills
