Position Overview

**NOTE: These positions are summer positions only with an estimated start date in early June. Review of applicants will only occur once per year and typically starts in late March and continues through mid-May.**

The University of Kansas Upward Bound programs are federally funded TRIO programs that works with first-generation and low-income college-bound students (rising 9th – rising 12th graders) in Shawnee, Douglas, Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties with the goal of increasing the rate at which students complete high school and graduate from college. The Upward Bound Non-Bridge Summer Institute is an intensive six-week academic program that gives participants a chance to experience college life while preparing for their upcoming school year. Students share a room in a university residence hall with other participants and interact with instructors and residence hall advisors through taking five academic classes, have support finishing homework with the help of tutors.


The Upward Bound Program Non-Bridge Summer Institute Camp Counselor will supervise approximately 50-65 high school students who are participating and serve as a role model for high school students who are participating in the Upward Bound Non-Bridge Summer Institute. The Camp Counselor position will run Monday -Thursday, June 12 –July 7, 2023 from 7:30 AM – 5:00 PM. Orientation for camp counselors is scheduled for June 1-2, 2023.

The Camp Counselor position is not a live-in position.

These positions are on-going temporary summer appointments. The successful candidate will adhere to the principles of promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in education.

Job Description

Student Services (60%)
  • Use professional ethics, implement goals, objectives, policies, and procedures of the summer component and supervise students to ensure safety and well-being, Monday-Thursday, 7:30am-5:00pm.
  • Walk students to and from residence halls, dining hall and various campus buildings/classrooms across KU campus.
  • Must transport (i.e walking/driving in personal vehicle) students who are ill/hurt to and from residence halls, dining hall and various campus buildings/classrooms to Watkins Health Services on KU campus as needed.
  • Maintain a binder with program forms (e.g. attendance sheets, class schedules, SFSP meal log, medical forms and medical claims forms, etc). Binder must be in their possession throughout the day.
  • Maintain discipline and harmonious relations in the residence hall, campus buildings/classrooms, and all other areas of the program activities
  • Oversee the physical maintenance of academic areas and dining common area as it pertains to Upward Bound Non Bridge students.
  • Assist Residence Hall Staff with the First Day Orientation/Move-in
  • Provide support to students in personal, social, and academic areas
  • Supervise students in the classrooms during silent study hall hours
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Residence Hall Director or Assistant Directors
Student Records Management, Tracking, and Program Guidance (40%)
  • Maintain confidentiality of participant information learned while completing job responsibilities
  • Assess any residence hall problems, assimilate facts, process viewpoints and make decisions in compliance with program guidelines.
  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate records and documentation regarding participant contacts, activities, and attendance
  • Monitor and evaluate students’ academic and social progress; see that students are up in the morning and prepared for class
  • Document student’s illness by completing medical claims forms for participants who are ill and visit the walk-in clinic at Watkins Health Services on campus.
  • Provide effective and open lines of communications with Assistant Directors, Residential Hall Staff, program staff, and university and community partners to ensure a positive work environment
  • Participate in staff orientation and attend all staff meetings

Position Requirements

This position is located on-site at the Lawrence, KS campus.

Required Qualifications

  1. High School Diploma/GED Equivalency
  2. Completed at least one year of higher education
  3. Valid Driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience with culturally diverse high school students
  2. Experience with conflict resolution
  3. Experience coordinating and supervising groups in a team focused work environment
  4. Have effective oral and written communication skills
  5. Possess good organizational skills
  6. Must have high level of maturity; be self-disciplined and able to work on a team
  7. Previous TRIO (E.g. Upward Bound) Program experience
  8. 6+ months of prior supervisory experience

Advertised Salary Range

Minimum $8 per hour, commensurate with experience

Work Schedule

Summer 2023 Non-Bridge Program dates are 6/1/23 – 7/7/23.
Training will be 6/1/23 – 6/2/23.
Hours during the program will be Sunday-Thursday, hours vary.
