Assistant/Associate/Full Professor in Architectural Engineering

Position Overview

The University of Kansas (KU) Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering (CEAE) seeks outstanding candidates for two tenured or tenure-track faculty positions, one at the rank of Assistant Professor and a second position at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor in architectural engineering. The focus areas for these positions are in building electrical power systems and the broader energy areas described below. The successful candidates are expected to contribute to the continued development of academic and research programs in architectural engineering and to the broader research community.

For the building electrical power systems position, relevant expertise may include building electrical power distribution and utilization; electrical system design for commercial and institutional buildings; power quality, reliability, and resilience; emergency and standby power systems; distributed energy resources and microgrids; grid modernization; smart building electrical systems; and advanced sensing, monitoring, and controls for building power systems. The successful candidate in this area will strengthen the program's research and teaching capacity in building electrical and power systems and contribute to engagement with industry and the profession.

The broader energy areas of interest include integrated building or district energy systems; building-to-grid integration and grid-interactive buildings; distributed energy resource management; building energy resilience; building energy efficiency and decarbonization; environmentally sustainable buildings; renewable energy systems for buildings and communities; grid reliability and energy infrastructure; and net-zero-energy buildings.

Successful candidates must have an earned doctorate in architectural, mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering or a closely related discipline by the time of appointment. Candidates must demonstrate the potential to develop collaborative, externally funded research programs and to design and teach high-quality undergraduate and graduate courses. The anticipated starting date is August 18, 2027. Successful candidates must be eligible to work in the U.S. prior to the start of the position.

These positions are subject to a collective bargaining agreement between the University of Kansas and the United Academics of KU, the exclusive representative for the bargaining unit. Faculty have the right to be a member or not be a member of UAKU without fear of personal or professional repercussions.

The University of Kansas School of Engineering (http://engr.ku.edu/) has undergone a significant expansion while taking explicit care to maintain and improve the high-quality student programs the university is known for. The effort involved a multifaceted approach aimed at growing our facilities, faculty, leadership, and research and, most importantly, supporting students. It also helps industry partners find the new talent, designs, and techniques they need to fuel economic growth and business success.

The CEAE Department (https://ceae.ku.edu/) currently has 26 tenured/tenure-track faculty, four teaching professors and professors of practice, one research professor, and approximately 360 undergraduate students and 140 graduate students, with programs leading to bachelor’s, master's, and doctoral degrees. The department has a strong history of conducting impactful research while focusing on the success of students at all levels. KU's ABET-accredited architectural engineering program benefits from the university's close proximity to the Kansas City metro area, which is home to one of the nation’s largest concentrations of architectural, engineering, and construction firms. This location provides rich opportunities for industry engagement, research partnerships, and student learning.
