Assistant Professor in Secondary Education

Position Overview

The Department of Curriculum & Teaching at the University of Kansas is seeking nominations and applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Secondary Education. The position’s primary focus is teaching secondary social studies education courses in the department’s teacher education campus-based undergraduate program in Lawrence, Kansas. Additionally, the candidate will be directing our Social Studies education program. The position will be full-time on an academic year appointment to begin August 18, 2024.

Successful applicants will have a doctorate in Secondary Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or Teacher Education with a concentration in middle/secondary social studies or a closely related field. Applicants are encouraged to outline areas of interests in their application materials.

Job Description

40% Teaching
  • Teach courses and develop curriculum in undergraduate and graduate programs including the department’s online M.S.Ed. program in Curriculum and Instruction, in-person and virtually based upon departmental need.
  • Model effective instructional practices for diverse student populations and the use of instructional technology in face-to-face, hybrid, and online learning environments.
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate students
  • Hold regular office hours
40% Research
  • Demonstrate sustained productivity through scholarly works/research through regular publications and professional presentations
  • Have a record of or potential for securing external funding to support research
20% Service
  • Participate in the regular academic activities of the department and School, including committee assignments and general service activities.
  • Collaborating with faculty across the School of Education and Human Sciences as well as performing service to the department, School, University, regional K-12 schools, and the profession.
  • Serve on and chair graduate committees
  • Professional service in the academic discipline and/or field.

Required Qualifications

  1. Doctorate in Secondary Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or Teacher Education with a concentration in middle/secondary social studies education, or a closely related field. If ABD, terminal degree must be achieved prior to the employment start date, by August 18, 2024.
  2. Minimum of three years of full-time teaching experience in grades 6-12.
  3. Demonstrated (or high potential for) teaching excellence with best-practices initiatives (including a culturally responsive pedagogy) in a university setting including the ability to develop and teach online courses.
  4. Demonstrated (or high potential for) research and/or scholarship relevant to social studies education as demonstrated through publications, awards, research grants, or presentations.

  • A current and complete curriculum vitae listing your record of accomplishments and productivity;

  • Writing sample or publication; and
  • The names, addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses of at least three professional references.
