Assistant Professor in Women's Health Psychology


Position Overview

The University of Kansas (KU) seeks an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology to begin 8/18/2025. This position is a full-time, academic-year appointment. We seek a colleague with a research focus on women’s health who would complement or enhance current strengths of the KU psychology department (particularly the major area of study in clinical health psychology) and who can contribute to ongoing efforts to build cross-disciplinary connections with units across the University of Kansas and University of Kansas Medical Center, specifically within the newly established, interdisciplinary NIH Center for Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) Leveraging Big Data to Advance Women’s Health. This position is eligible to be supported by the Beatrice Wright Faculty Scholarship for an Assistant Professor, which comes with an annual stipend to support research.

Job Description

The department of psychology is a member of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences which is the largest school on the campus and plays a central role within the University. Founded in 1865, KU is a designated Carnegie comprehensive doctoral and research university, and is one of only 34 public members of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU). The Department of Psychology is home to 26 full-time faculty members who are members of three concentrations: Social Psychology, Brain Behavior and Quantitative studies, and an American Psychological Association accredited Clinical Psychological Program Psychology. The Clinical Science concentration includes a Major Area of Study in Health Psychology . Faculty within the Clinical Health Psychology Major Area of Study routinely collaborate with faculty at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, KS.

Job Duties

Research (40%)
Tenure-track faculty are expected to develop and maintain an active research program which gains national recognition and is advanced substantially beyond the level of the Ph.D. dissertation.
  • Conduct research in an area of expertise that complements current strengths in the department with a focus on women’s health and big data approaches, including, but not limited to data science, informatics, epidemiology, and statistics, for alignment with our NIH Center for Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE).
  • Maintain an active research program that continues to grow in depth, breadth, and importance.
  • Publish in peer-reviewed journals, present findings at professional conferences, and maintain and pursue external funding.
Teaching (40%)
  • Teach 4 courses per academic year in the department. Develop or teach courses at both the graduate and undergraduate level. At the graduate level, we are particularly interested in applicants who are able to teach clinically-relevant courses such as in health psychology, psychological assessment, or other core clinical courses and/or courses in advanced statistical methods that relate to big data approaches.
  • Adhere to program, College, and University policies including expectations that faculty must develop assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide feedback to students, and assign grades, and hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught. A minimum of three posted office hours each week is required. Be available for reasonable appointments if a student cannot meet during scheduled office hours.
  • All faculty members are to take their teaching and advising responsibilities seriously and strive for excellence in the classroom.
  • Mentor graduate and/or undergraduate students in research.
  • Serve on graduate student committees that supervise and evaluate progress toward degree completion.
Service (20%)
  • Provide general service to the department, the College, the University, and to the academic profession.
  • Tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in appropriate professional activities,
    such as attending program meetings, carrying out program committee assignments, participating in regional or national meetings or conferences, and refereeing or reviewing manuscripts for research journals and grant proposals. Service to the College and University is also expected, and to the greater profession at-large.

Required Qualifications

  1. A Ph.D. in Psychology or a closely related area.
  2. A record of scholarly achievement with clear evidence of an ongoing research program in the area of women’s health.
  3. Demonstrated ability to teach effectively at the undergraduate level and interest in teaching and mentoring at the graduate level.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. A PhD in Psychology from an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited clinical program, Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS) accredited clinical program, or a similar developed practice area.
