Assistant Professor of Music Education - Strings
Position Overview
The University of Kansas School of Music seeks to fill a full-time, academic year (nine month) faculty position to teach undergraduate and graduate music education (strings) beginning on August 18, 2025. The University of Kansas School of Music is a comprehensive university music school offering professional training in a wide array of specializations through baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral degree programs. A charter member of the National Association of Schools of Music (1928), KU is the only institution authorized by the Kansas Board of Regents to grant doctoral degrees in music.
This appointment will be at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (tenure-track). The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate music education courses, typically five courses over two semesters. Expectations include undergraduate courses in music education and string instrumental music education, graduate courses in instrumental music and other areas of specialization, in addition to advising theses and dissertations. Other duties could include conducting/leading an orchestra. The successful candidate will conduct research in their major field of study and maintain substantial creative accomplishments.

Required Qualifications
For appointment as Assistant Professor:
For appointment as Associate Professor:
- Doctorate in music education or closely related field required by start of appointment.
- Three years of successful experience in teaching string instrumental music in a K-12 or college/university setting
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills with a commitment to collegiality as evidenced by application materials and interview process.
For appointment as Associate Professor:
- Doctorate in music education or closely related field.
- Five years of successful experience in teaching string instrumental music in college/university setting.
- Active research program with publications in peer-reviewed journals and refereed presentations at national/international conferences.
- For appointment at the rank of Associate Professor with tenure, the candidate must meet or exceed KU School of Music’s standards for research, teaching and service at that rank.
