Asst/Assoc/Full Professor - Transportation Engineering
Position Overview
The University of Kansas (KU) Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering (CEAE) seeks an outstanding individual for a tenure/tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Full Professor in the discipline of transportation engineering. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the development of academic and research programs and to the research community.
This search is focused on those candidates exploring cutting-edge efforts in transportation engineering, including the following: data-driven approaches to emerging technologies and smart mobility; transportation infrastructure systems related to connected and automated and/or electric vehicles; transportation engineering modeling, including optimization, networks, and operations; resilient transportation systems; sustainable transportation solutions; and/or efficient and safe movement of people and goods. The estimated start is August 18, 2025. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. by date of appointment.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to conduct their research through the University of Kansas Transportation Center (KUTC), a multi-disciplinary research center operating at KU since 1977. With over $2 million in annual expenditures, the KUTC conducts, coordinates, and promotes transportation-oriented research, training, and technology transfer for the State of Kansas, the region, and the nation. CEAE faculty participate in research funded by various centers affiliated with the Department, such as the USDOT-funded Regional Mid-America Transportation Center – Transportation Safety and Equity (MATC-TSE), the National Center for Construction Safety (NCSS), and the Kansas NSF EPSCoR RII Track-1 (Adaptive and Resilient Infrastructures driven by Social Equity – ARISE).

The effort involved a multi-faceted approach aimed at growing our facilities, faculty, leadership, research and, most important, supporting students, as it helps industry partners find the new talent, designs and techniques they need to fuel economic growth and business success. The Department of Civil, Environmental & Architectural Engineering (http://ceae.ku.edu/) currently has 24 tenured/tenure-track faculty, four professors of practice, one teaching professor, one research professor, and approximately 340 undergraduate students and 160 graduate students, with programs leading to bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.

Job Description
40% Teaching
Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in civil/transportation engineering. Develop courses and participate in curriculum development. Supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students throughout the course of their studies.
40% Research
Perform and conduct research related to data-driven approaches to emerging technologies and smart mobility; transportation infrastructure systems related to connected and automated and/or electric vehicles; transportation engineering modeling, including optimization, networks, and operations; resilient transportation systems; sustainable transportation solutions; and/or efficient and safe movement of people and goods. Establish a strong research agenda leading to external grant support and publication in recognized refereed journals as well as participating in local, national and international professional conferences and other activities appropriate to the discipline. Supervise M.S. and Ph.D. studies.
20% Service
Perform service activities normally expected of university faculty commensurate with rank, including committee service to Department, School, and University. Also includes national and international service to the profession.

- Earned doctorate in civil engineering or a closely-related discipline at the time of appointment.
- Demonstrable expertise in the field of data-driven approaches to emerging technologies and smart mobility; transportation infrastructure systems related to connected and automated and/or electric vehicles; transportation engineering modeling, including optimization, networks, and operations; resilient transportation systems; sustainable transportation solutions; and/or efficient and safe movement of people and goods.
- Experience communicating ideas effectively and working well with others as demonstrated through application materials and interview.
- Demonstrated potential to develop an externally-funded research program and to design and teach high quality undergraduate and graduate courses.
For the rank of Associate Professor
- Earned doctorate in civil engineering or a closely-related discipline.
