Asst/Assoc/Full Teaching Professor - EECS

Position Overview

The University of Kansas is seeking a Teaching Professor to teach undergraduate courses in the Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science (EECS). The EECS Department serves over 1,000 undergraduate students in its five BS programs: Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Cybersecurity Engineering, Computer Science, and Applied Computing. While teaching needs exist in all our programs, we have a specific need in Computer Engineering.

This position is a full-time, academic-year appointment and can be filled at the Assistant, Associate, or full Teaching Professor rank, based on years of qualified experience. The appointment is limited term for 3 years and is renewable subject to review and funding.

The course EECS 388—Embedded Systems addresses internal organization of micro-controller systems, sometimes called embedded systems, that are used in a wide variety of engineered systems. This course also covers the following items: Programming in C and assembly language; input and output of physical systems; collecting data from sensors; and controlling external devices. The course focuses on one or two specific microprocessors, software development and organization, and building embedded systems. This course has a lab section and is supported by multiple graduate teaching assistants (GTAs).

This Teaching Professor will teach in-person classes on the University of Kansas-Lawrence campus. The courses assigned will include the Embedded Systems course described above plus others at the discretion of the Department Chair. Courses with separate lab sections will have additional GTA assistance for the lab experience and to support grading, etc.

The University of Kansas is a Carnegie doctoral/research-extensive university with a $1.4 billion endowment and a faculty of 2,600. The 1,000-acre main campus is in Lawrence, a community of 95,000 in hilly northeast Kansas that lies about 35 miles west of Kansas City. Job Description

Teaching – 70%
  1. The minimum teaching load for teaching faculty is six courses per year. Scheduling of courses to meet department, school, and university requirements is the unilateral responsibility of the Chair of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Teaching faculty are expected to meet all class sessions consistent with the responsible conduct of their assigned class. Effective teaching is monitored by student evaluations, peer reviews, and alumni responses and surveys.
  2. As assigned by the Chair of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, teaching faculty develop and update syllabi, study guides, instructor’s guides, test questions, tests, and web-based material. Participate in regular meetings with instructors and staff as needed. Assist in the development and implementation of technology and student-centered pedagogies in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science courses.
  3. Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught.
  4. Supervise Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) and Undergraduate that assist in their classes.
  5. Adhere to department, School, and university policies and procedures.

Scholarship – 15%
  1. Research efforts will contribute to the mission of teaching faculty primarily in the areas of pedagogy and student retention.
  2. Teaching faculty may contribute to course transformation efforts and assessment; conduct and presents research on teaching and learning and/or typical disciplinary scholarship. This includes partnering with faculty members to teach and implement creative and effective mechanisms for improving student learning, engagement, and retention, especially in large introductory courses.
  3. Areas of focus for publications and/or presentations may include but are not limited to the scholarship of assessment and curriculum design, development of new undergraduate laboratories/research opportunities and/or new teaching methods, supervision and evaluation of undergraduate research in the professor’s area of research expertise, methods to enhance online course resources outside of class time and use of active learning activities to maximize concept mastery during face-to-face class and laboratory/discussion time, development of programs, workshops, and training guidelines that feature research-based instructional practices (including but not limited to inquiry and discovery based instruction, student centered instruction, peer-mentoring, and the integration of technology into the classroom).
  4. Teaching faculty may involve graduate research assistants (GRAs) in their research, and in the case of master’s students, they may Chair the student’s graduate committee.

Service – 15%
  1. All teaching faculty members are expected to mentor undergraduate students. Teaching faculty are expected to perform service to the department’s constituent communities: the department, the School of Engineering, the University, the State, the Nation, and the profession.
  2. All teaching faculty are expected to be members of appropriate unit-level undergraduate committees, and other committees as appropriate.

Required Qualifications

  1. Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree (e.g., Doctor of Engineering) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or closely related field
  2. Demonstrated written communication skills.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work well with students, faculty, and administrators.
  4. Demonstrated interest in pedagogical design and improvement in course teaching
Rank of position will be determined based upon years of qualified experience:
  • The entry-level rank is for Assistant Teaching Professor
  • Six (6) years demonstrated experience in teaching college-level introductory EECS courses for Associate Teaching Professor
  • Twelve (12) years demonstrated experience in teaching college-level introductory EECS courses for full Teaching Professor
