Application Developer


Position Overview

Work as part of a team to support the research and service mission of the Kansas Geological Survey (KGS). The Application Developer designs, develops, implements, maintains, and supports data-driven applications (full stack application developer). An ideal candidate for this position is an organized, resourceful, and self-motivated team player.

Work Location: On-site is preferred. Hybrid is available if recommended by the position supervisor. Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. and be physically located within the U.S.

Starting salary range: $70,000 - $85,000, depending on qualifications and experience.

Salary, Employment Status, and Fringe Benefits
Full-time position with benefits, subject to a six-month probation and annual performance reviews. The official University of Kansas title is “Research Engineer.” Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Job Description

(30%) Work independently and collaboratively to design, implement, and support data-driven web applications supporting KGS research, service, and administrative functions.

(30%) Modernize legacy applications using the standard KGS software stack.

(25%) Develop, implement, and maintain data-driven web applications in support of state agencies.

(10%) Provide consultation, training, hardware and software technical assistance.

(5%) Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Position Requirements

  1. This position will require attendance at regularly scheduled meetings either onsite or through telecommunication platforms.
  2. This position may periodically be required to provide on-site assistance at the KGS facilities in Lawrence and Wichita.

Required Qualifications

  1. Associate’s degree with 3 years related experience OR Bachelor’s degree with 1 year of related experience.
  2. Professional experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and AJAX.
  3. Professional experience in data-driven application development.
  4. Professional experience with relational databases.
  5. Strong communication skills. Written skills will be evaluated by the quality of application materials and/or published materials. Oral communication skills will be assessed by the interview and through reference checks.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Professional experience with RDBMS including table and schema design, indexes, sequences, and triggers.
  2. Professional experience with batch-processing using shell scripts, Python, or similar scripting languages.
  3. Professional experience with front-end development and responsive web design.
  4. Experience with object-oriented programming languages such as C++, C#, Java, or .Net
  5. Experience with web-based mapping applications.
  6. Experience with project scoping, requirements gathering, and system design.
