Core Scanner Technologist


Position Overview

The Core Scanner Technologist will be responsible for the daily operation of our Geotek Multi-Sensor Core Logger (MSCL). The Technologist will primarily work independently but will be assisted by the Lab Manager for tasks beyond the standard daily operating procedures.

Job Description

85% - Operating MSCL:
  • Daily core logging.
  • Assisting with instrument calibration.
  • Handling core boxes.
  • Assisting with mechanical resets of MSCL.
  • Uploading data to database daily.
  • Communicating with the Lab Manager daily about state of MSCL operations.
10% - Core Imaging/Photo Editing:
  • Photographing core using the MSCL’s linescan camera.
  • QA/QC of photos captured on the MSCL.
  • Photo editing using Geotek Imaging Software.
5% - 3D Part Designing and Printing:
  • Designing custom parts for MSCL in FreeCAD.
  • Uploading designs to Form Labs 3D Printer and executing the print.

Position Requirements

Ability to perform physical tasks of the job duties, either with or without reasonable accommodation, to include, but not limited to:
  • Stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, frequently lift and move up to 30 pounds, and occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Tolerate low to moderate noise level in the work environment.

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's Degree in Geology or related field and one (1) year of related experience.
  2. Experience operating analytical instruments and working in a laboratory setting, as evidenced in application materials.
  3. One (1) year computer experience operating a PC computer, Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Excel, Word, or other similar software applications, as evidenced in application materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience operating a Geotek Multi-Sensor Core Logger or similar core scanning instrument as evidenced in application materials.
  2. Proficiency in FreeCAD or similar software as shown in application materials.
  3. Knowledge of portable bulk chemistry devices (e.g., XRF, LIBS) as demonstrated in application materials.
  4. Experience using 3D printers as evidenced in application materials.
