Custodian
Position Overview
The incumbent will perform a variety of duties including general cleaning and sanitation of residential bath areas; general floor care and cleaning, both carpeted and hard surface floors; operating and maintaining mechanical and electrical equipment used in floor maintenance; collecting and removing all trash from public, classroom, dorm rooms and service areas; moving furniture, appliances, and supplies in and out of buildings and residence halls as directed; and setting-up equipment and furniture for special programs.
Hutchinson Campus
The Hutchinson Campus consists of 173 acres with fifteen buildings including two multi-story residential student dormitories.
The Hutchinson Campus is home to the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC). A unit of The University of Kansas (KU), KLETC serves as the central agency for all law enforcement training in the State of Kansas. KLETC manages a $12 million annual budget, 65 authorized FTE staff (augmented by more than 400 contract/adjunct staff annually), and trains nearly 15,000 students annually in residential, online, and outreach programs. KLETC serves 437 recognized law enforcement and police agencies in Kansas, providing basic training and continuing education programs throughout each fiscal year.

Job Description
40% - Common Areas, Offices, Classrooms:
Vacuums, bonnets, and extracts carpeted floors and upholstered chairs using semi-automatic equipment. Uses specialized tools and equipment to clean hard surface floors in common areas, student dorm rooms, offices, classrooms, etc.. Incumbent cleans public areas by dusting, polishing, and rearranging furniture to standard arrangements; deep cleans staff offices, as required by supervisor; cleaning, inspecting, and adjusting blinds as needed; washing walls, windows, and doors as assigned; cleaning water fountains and emptying non-toxic waste receptacles; emptying, cleaning and refilling portable dehumidifiers; and miscellaneous furniture moving and set-up; all following standard procedures and safety precautions. Cleans and sanitizes exercise equipment in fitness areas. Cleans and disinfects exercise mats in gymnasium; may assist in setting up and putting away exercise mats used in classes.
35% - Facilities, etc.
Locks and/or unlocks building doors-exterior and interior as directed and/or scheduled. Checks and maintains exterior dock areas, handicap access ramps and equipment, elevator cabs and doors, etc. Provides appropriate facility access to students remaining on campus after hours. Follows safety policies regarding use of supplies, tools and equipment. Performs other duties related to cleaning or maintenance as assigned. Works alone or as part of a crew to set up for special and/or routine events in all areas of the facility. Special projects as assigned. Moves furniture, appliances, and supplies in and out of halls as directed. Checks on a daily basis of maintenance needs and writes work orders for any requiring skilled tradespersons. Reports and turns-in lost items to appropriate persons. Reports any suspicious incident or persons to supervisor. Reports broken or missing items and unauthorized furniture discovered in student rooms to Supervisor. Participates in training sessions and in-service classes or workshops. Assists with snow removal and surface treatment. May be required to drive cars, trucks or other passenger vehicles as required. Operates washer and dryer units and folds laundered items as needed; cleans washers, dryers and laundry rooms.
20% - Restroom Facilities:
Cleans/sanitizes bath fixtures including toilets, lavatories, floors, mirrors, counter tops, tile walls, partitions, showers, and hardware up to several times daily. Also empties waste cans, sanitary napkin receptacles, and replenishes consumable supplies before supplies are exhausted in the bath areas, up to several times daily. Cleans floor drains and adds water according to established schedule. Acid cleans urinals and toilets. Trash emptying and general cleaning in bath areas requires special care to avoid any blood-borne pathogen exposure (needle sticks, blood, vomit, excrement, etc.). A number of cleaning assignments require special training in avoiding bio-hazards and are followed with specialized chemical treatment of surfaces. All work is performed following standard procedures and safety precautions.

Position Requirements
- Lift and carry up to 20 pounds constantly and up to 50 pounds occasionally, with or without accommodation.
- Work on ladders of different heights.
- Endurance and stamina to work long hours on custodial tasks.
- Perform tasks in diverse and challenging environmental conditions, both indoors and outdoors.
- Work overtime or temporary change in schedule, as needed.
- Respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
- Report to work during declared periods of inclement weather.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Kansas driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with materials, methods, and practices used in cleaning operations as evidenced in application materials.
- Custodial experience in large residential or commercial buildings, as evidenced in application materials.
- Experience with the operation, use, and care of vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbing machines, polishing machines, and other janitorial equipment, as evidenced in application materials.
- Advanced training in custodial and high-volume cleaning operations, as evidenced in application materials.
- Experience interacting with customers and/or the public, as evidenced in application materials.
