General Maint Repair Tech Sr (3:30pm - 12:00am)


Position Overview

Facilities Services supports KU's mission of learning, scholarship, and creative endeavor by operating and maintaining the University's physical plant and grounds. The incumbent is responsible for independently, or leading a team to perform a wide variety of maintenance and emergency repair tasks to University buildings (physical structure, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems), with the employee being involved in a regular program of inspection and repair at a journeyman level using more than one skilled trade. This position requires the operation of work issued vehicles.

Job Description

50% - This is a lead position to assist in the troubleshooting, repair and preventative maintenance for various fire alarm, mechanical, electrical, 3 phase power, generator, plumbing and structural equipment. Performs lubrication, cleaning inspection, changes belts and filters in equipment. Performs repairs on heating ventilating and air conditioning units, reset fire alarm systems, electric motors, gear reducer, air compressors, various electrical and pneumatic control components.

40% - Responds to emergency calls involving loss of utilities or equipment failure. Resets breakers helps repair leaks in water or air lines. Repairs are performed as time and expertise permits. May assist Central Shop staff with more complex repairs. Assist in training and mentoring general maintenance staff.

10% - Other Related Work as Assigned: Maintains an adequate supply of tools, parts, and supplies for jobs. Responds to after-hours emergency calls as needed. Assists with other maintenance areas and in other work areas as assigned. Assists with snow removal and surface treatment.

Position Requirements

  1. Reach, grasp, hold, lift and place moderately heavy loads and heavy loads occasionally (50 lbs) with or without accommodation.
  2. Perform work above normal heights, in confined spaces and extreme temperatures (hot and cold) inside and outdoors.
  3. Operate work issued vehicles for transporting staff and materials
  4. Work occasional planned and unplanned overtime as needed including responding to after-hours emergencies as needed.
  5. Report to work during declared periods of inclement weather.
  6. Must have a valid driver’s license by the time of hire and maintain that license throughout employment.
  7. Must digitally enter work order information and perform other electronic communications as required.

Required Qualifications

  1. High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency.
  2. Three (3) years of experience in a skilled craft area. Certificate from a vocational school or an associate's degree in a building or mechanical trade area may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. One year of generator and/or life safety systems experience, as evidenced in application materials.
  2. Experience with standard practices, tools, equipment and materials associated with a variety of skilled crafts and building trades, as evidenced in application materials.
  3. Experience with occupational hazards and safety precautions of skilled crafts and building trades, as evidenced in application materials.
  4. Coursework or work experience that demonstrates ability to read and correctly interpret blueprints, electrical or plumbing schematics, as demonstrated in application materials.
  5. Experience working in a university, college or multi-building campus environment, as evidenced in application materials.
