Hawk Link Coordinator


Position Overview

Hawk Link Coordinators at the University of Kansas assist the coordination of Hawk Link initiatives for all KU students while targeting student success programming and outreach efforts that prioritize first-generation, Pell-eligible, online/satellite campus and/or rural students by providing an access point to immediate support and connection to the KU Lawrence, Edwards, and online campuses. Through intentional outreach, the Hawk Link Coordinator will provide academic and personal success guidance and connections to students that align with institutional and unit retention initiatives.

The Hawk Link Coordinator will cultivate opportunities designed to facilitate the transition to college, experiences during college, and preparation for post-graduation. Reporting to the Director of Hawk Link, this position assists students with navigating campus, identifying campus resources, and linking students to educational opportunities in conjunction with the Hawk Link Success Team and other professional staff within Academic Success.

Hawk Link is a campus-wide student support office designed to support the access and retention students through student-facing service, programming, scholarship management, and community-building. Signature Hawk Link initiatives include Jayhawk JumpStart, Mentored Scholars Program (MSP), and the Haskell/KU Exchange Program.

Academic Success advocates for and strategically advances education at the University of Kansas. We work with students from orientation to graduation, providing them with high-quality, data-driven academic and career advising, targeted academic support systems and networks, and intentional student connection and personalized support. Hawk Link is part of the Academic Success Initiatives team alongside Academic Success Navigators, Military Affiliated Student Center, Academic Success Operations and Technology, and Leavenworth Student and Academic Support Services.

Job Description

60% - Student Support and Engagement
  • Provide academic and personal success triage support and consultation for approximately 200 students per semester to develop holistic academic success plans with students that include development of personal and academic goals.
  • Serve as a student concierge for their KU Student Success Team including students’ assigned academic advisor, financial aid advisor, and faculty members.
  • Execute scheduled student outreach campaigns via phone, text and email to assure early student connections are made before and after new student orientation and beyond.
  • Directly link students to academic support services such as study strategies, time management and organization, critical thinking, test preparation, note taking skills, self-monitoring skills as needed.
  • Utilize proactive approaches for communicating with and scheduling meetings with students with the goal of offering touch points at least three times per semester.
  • Document and maintain all communication with students resulting from appointments, email, phone, and walk-ins using university-approved systems.
  • Develop rapport and productive relationships with students by creating a community of care with a welcoming environment for students to grow and thrive.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to support and link students as necessary.
20% - Programming and Event Support
  • Collaborate with the Hawk Link Success Team to develop a student program plan that supports the student learning outcomes for Academic Success in highly relevant ways for Hawk Link students.
  • Support team event coordination which includes marketing, student communication, execution and assessment for each program scheduled with additional support from Academic Success Operations.
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of Jayhawk JumpStart, Hawk Week, and additional Hawk Link programming.
  • Attend Hawk Link Student Specialist staff meetings, training, and professional development in conjunction with other Hawk Link Coordinators.
15% - Facilitation and Instruction
  • Serve as the instructor on record for academic courses offered for Hawk Link students such as UNIV 101. All instructional support and expectations are embedded into the workday.
  • Collaborate with Academic Success units to provide academic skills workshops for students.
5% - Other Duties as assigned by Academic Success Leadership
  • Attend relevant staff meetings and trainings related to Academic Success Initiatives.
  • Use University-approved systems for all student records and adhere to Academic Success technology use standards and FERPA guidelines.
  • Serve on departmental and campus committees as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned by Academic Success Leadership.

Position Requirements

  1. Travel is less than 25% for occasional required meetings with advance notice as well as event planning-related local driving.
  2. This position is student-facing and requires working on-site at the Lawrence Campus through the probationary period. Once complete, hybrid work arrangements 1-2 days are available with onsite work expected during peak service periods and all-staff meetings.

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s Degree with one (1) year of relevant experience OR Master’s Degree.
  2. One (1) year of experience working in an educational setting or customer service role.
  3. Prior experience with technology systems (such as Microsoft Office suite, MS Teams, Google suite etc.), as evidenced in application materials.
  4. Excellent written communication skills, as demonstrated by application materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Prior instructional experience such as teaching/facilitating new student courses, as evidenced in application materials.
  2. Master’s degree in education, counseling, psychology, special education, social work, liberal arts, or related field.
  3. Prior experience working with a wide range of student populations, as evidenced by application materials.
  4. Previous experience creating and facilitating student events, workshops, or other student engagement opportunities, as evidenced in application materials.
  5. Previous experience in academic support services, advising or academic coaching services at an institution of higher education, as shown in application materials.
  6. Six (6) months experience with web-based student retention software such as EAB/Navigate.
