Position Overview
The Facilities Services department at KU supports the University's mission of learning, scholarship, and creativity by operating and maintaining the physical plant and grounds. This position is responsible for the installation, monitoring, troubleshooting, and repair of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment in large buildings, including offices, classrooms, dormitories, and laboratories. Duties include working with pneumatic and electronic controls, performing preventive maintenance, and adhering to EPA guidelines for CFC and HCFC refrigerants. This role requires the operation of University-issued vehicles.

Job Description
30% – Install, monitor, and troubleshoot refrigeration and air conditioning systems according to building specifications, blueprints, and maintenance manuals. Systems typically range up to 100 tons. Perform maintenance tasks such as disassembling, repairing, and reassembling equipment like air conditioners, refrigerators, and pneumatic control systems. Installs, monitors, troubleshoots, and makes needed repairs to residential and commercial HVAC equipment. Maintain operating logs, gauge readings, and ensure compliance with EPA refrigerant guidelines.
30% – Respond to repair requests for HVAC systems, addressing issues such as leaks, defects, ‘too hot’/’too cold’ calls etc. Communicate with customers regarding their experience and work the issue through to completion including identifying and reporting repair parts and giving thorough customer updates throughout the repair process. Manages multiple work orders and customer issues daily. Ensures that work sites are clean and organized.15% – Maintain an inventory of repair materials and keep accurate records of maintenance activities.
15% – Install and maintain refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, including pneumatic and electronic controls. Perform tasks such as cutting, bending, and welding to connect tubing and refrigerant lines. Test OHMS, amperage, and voltage on equipment.
10% – Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
- Ability to lift, carry, and place moderately heavy loads frequently, and occasionally lift heavy loads (up to 50 lbs) with or without accommodation.
- Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and in extreme temperatures both indoors and outdoors.
- Willingness to work overtime and respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
- Ability to report to work during inclement weather.
- Must enter work orders and perform digital communications as required.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- Two years of experience in refrigeration/air conditioning installation and repair. A certificate from a vocational school or an associate degree in the trade may substitute for one year of required experience.
- EPA CFC Certification for refrigerants (or ability to obtain certification within six months of hire).
- Valid driver’s license at the time of hire and throughout employment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Three or more years of experience in installing and repairing refrigeration/air conditioning systems, including DX residential and commercial units and small chiller systems up to 100 tons.
- Experience in a college or university setting.
- Experience working with HVAC systems in large, multi-story buildings.
- Electrical experience, including knowledge of the National Electric Code.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints as demonstrated by work experience.
