Instructional Designer
Position Overview
The Instructional Designer is responsible for successfully introducing and incorporating academic pedagogical principles and learning-enhanced technologies into course design initiatives within online, hybrid and web-enhanced courses across the University. This person will provide hands-on instructional design and course creation support to KU faculty and work as part of a creative and dynamic team in delivering workshops, seminars, and creating materials that promote online and hybrid learning.
Jayhawk Global is an education innovation center at the University of Kansas that advances and delivers flexible forms of learner engagement, including online degree programs, professional and workforce development, and competency-based educational offerings. The Center for Online and Distance Learning specializes in instructional design and media innovation. We serve KU faculty and staff who develop and deliver online and hybrid courses. Our focus is to facilitate Jayhawk Global’s strategic goals for expanding online education by providing pedagogy and technology expertise in support of teaching and learning.

Job Description
60% - Course Design and Development
20% - Faculty Support
10% - Implementation and Production
5% - Research
5% - Other related duties as assigned
- Work with faculty and staff to design and develop online and hybrid courses delivered in the Canvas learning management system.
- Perform Quality Matters informal reviews and prepare reports based on review findings.
- Support course delivery and evaluate the effectiveness of online course materials.
20% - Faculty Support
- Design and deliver faculty workshops and training in the areas of online teaching, course design, instructional technologies, and pedagogy.
- Create support documentation and/or multimedia for faculty in the areas of online teaching, course design, and instructional technologies including use of learning management systems.
10% - Implementation and Production
- Work with Digital Media Coordinators and other campus partners, such as KUIT Educational Technologists, to implement and facilitate the use of technologies that support teaching and learning.
5% - Research
- Explore, evaluate, and promote new pedagogical techniques and technologies.
5% - Other related duties as assigned
Position Requirements
This position is located on the Lawrence campus, and physical presence in the Lawrence office is required on a regular basis. Occasionally this position will require some flexibility during academic year peak, special events, and supporting faculty and projects at the KU Edwards Campus.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in educational technology, education, instructional design, curriculum and instruction or related field.
- Two years demonstrated knowledge and application of instructional design principles, learning theory, online learning strategies, and technology integration.
- Two years' experience collaborating with faculty to design, develop, and deliver quality online instruction.
- Two years' experience creating online courses using a content or learning management system such as Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle, etc.
- Two years' experience managing multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining effective working relationships with colleagues in a collaborative team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree or higher in instructional design or educational technology.
- Experience working with college-level academic and technology staff, as evidenced in application materials.
- Experience working with a variety of teaching and learning technologies such as Adobe products, Articulate360, Canvas, Microsoft Teams, Office 365, VoiceThread, and Zoom, as evidenced in application materials.
- One year of experience teaching, especially in a college-level online course environment.
- Familiarity with the Quality Matters rubric, as evidenced in application materials.
- Experience and/or awareness of universal design and accessibility principles, as evidenced in application materials and interview process.
- One year of experience using HTML/CSS, as evidenced in application materials.
- Membership or participation in professional associations and organizations, as evidenced in application materials.
- Excellent written communication skills as demonstrated by application materials.
