Research Technician
Position Overview
The Erber lab at The University of Kansas School of Pharmacy is currently seeking a talented and motivated research technician interested in applying tools to investigate the roles played by DNA-protein interactions in human physiology and pathophysiology. The successful candidate will participate in the research projects currently underway in the Erber lab including, but not limited to, the roles of DNA-protein interactions in cancer biology, diabetes, and neurodegeneration disease. This position will support laboratory research activities and includes 1) performing experiments as directed and 2) general laboratory support and maintenance of associated resources. Associated research activities are diverse and will include cell culture, protein and DNA extractions, western blotting, protein purifications, high performance liquid chromatorgrpahy (HPLC), and mass spectrometry.
Job Description
60% - Perform experiments as directed or trained.
- These duties include carrying out directed research experiments to study DNA-protein interactions in human physiology and pathophysiology.
- Design experiments employing techniques such as cell culture, protein and DNA extractions, western blotting protein purifications, HPLC, and mass spectrometry analyses.
- Keep accurate and detailed records of experiments performed.
- This position will order and maintain inventory of laboratory supplies and reagents, assist in maintaining equipment, and assist with human resource support efforts (e.g., training personnel).
- Management of laboratory records and laboratory documents.
- Coordination of activities on instrumentation.
- Write Reports: These duties include graphing and presenting data. Writing technical reports for the lab.
- Preparing standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Required Qualifications
- High School/GED and 4 years related experience OR Associate's degree with 2 years experience. Related experience can be in an academic or industrial laboratory in chemistry, biophysics, biology, or other closely related research areas.
- Interpersonal and communication skills, organizational skills, and attention to detail as evidenced by application materials and/or interview.
- Computer skills in MS Office (Excel, Word and Power Point) as evidenced in application materials.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology or closely related discipline and 1 year experience in an academic or industrial laboratory in chemistry, biochemistry, biology or related research areas.
- Knowledge of cell culture work as evidenced by appropriate laboratory experience.
- Knowledge of analytical separations of analytes using high performance liquid chromatography as evidenced by appropriate laboratory experience and/or relevant coursework.
- Knowledge of extractions of biomolecules and separations for western blotting or DNA quantitation as evidenced by appropriate laboratory experience and/or relevant coursework.
- Academic or industrial experience in MS techniques.
- Data analysis using software packages (i.e., Prism, Chemdraw). Must be able to use the Internet to perform scientific literature searches.
