Academic Success Initiatives Social Media Marketing Student Intern


Position Overview

Academic Success (Success Initiatives – Success Operations) is seeking an intern to manage social media accounts for multiple units within Academic Success Initiatives (Hawk Link, Leavenworth Student & Academic Support, Military Affiliated Student Center and University Career Center). In holding this position on the Digital Media team, you receive mentorship by expert specialists, are be provided with career relevant networking opportunities, and are provided the opportunity to work directly as a social media content creator and manager. This intern must be a free and creative thinker bringing new ideas to the table with the ability to collaborate and grow with their team. The Digital Media Team office, located at Summerfield 206, operates from 8am-5pm Monday-Friday.

Per the State of Kansas, student employees may hold concurrent appointments not to exceed maximum appointment and hours worked levels. However, concurrent student appointments must be of matching FLSA designation (exempt/salaried or non-exempt/hourly).

Job Description

60% - Marketing
  • Assist, create and implement social media calendars for units.
  • Develop and execute student engagement strategies specific to varying social media platforms. (Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn)
  • Assist in the development of marketing campaigns to promote Academic Success initiatives such as events and campaigns for multiple units.
  • Enhance and maintain Academic Success unit’s brand within marketing initiatives.
  • Work directly with members of the Digital Media team to collaborate on marketing strategies and content creation.
  • Understand target audiences by obtaining knowledge of past, current and future trends to successfully aid in trend-forecasting to create content they may not be shared during their internship.
  • Maintain consistent and appropriate communications with Supervisors and Student Intern team.
30% - Content Creation
  • Maintain, create and curate day-to-day content for multiple unit’s social media channels.
  • Work directly with members of the Digital Media team to collaborate on marketing strategies and content creation.
  • Assist, create and implement social media calendars for units.
  • Be an active participant in the workflow of each project and assignment involving deliverables for units served and other student interns on their direct team.
10% - Event Support
  • Actively participate in departmental events to capture and promote events in the moment for live footage
  • (Facebook Live/Stories, Instagram Live/Stories, Youtube Live)
  • Be present for departmental events relevant to the position. These events may fall outside of the standard workweek hours and may require travel.

Required Qualifications

  1. Intermediate experience with Canva.
  2. Ability to prioritize tasks and projects independently to meet established deadlines.
  3. Strong verbal and written communication skills as demonstrated by application materials.
  4. Participation in professional development through attendance of keynote presentations, Q&A sessions and workshops assigned to the Digital Media team.
  5. Flexibility in adjusting deadlines for deliverables throughout the creative process.
  6. Ability to work in office and on location for assignments.
  7. Understand communication strategies in developing marketing campaigns for use on social media platforms.
  8. Understanding that certain requirements must be met to receive internship credits through The University of Kansas.
  9. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments)

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience with Meta Business Suite or similar social media management platforms.
  2. Experience with Microsoft Office 364.
  3. Experience, knowledge and skills with Adobe Creative Suite (Adobe Premier Pro, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom), and/or similar photo editing and motion graphics programs.
  4. Self-starter who can take artistic direction and contribute original ideas in a collaborate manner within the team.
  5. Ability to focus and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  6. Creative and innovative strategical thinking with the ability to understand marketing strategies for short-term and long-term campaigns.
  7. Knowledge of the principles and practices of digital, in-person and print based marketing
  8. Knowledge of management and planning strategies for design focused collaborative projects.
