This position plays a vital role in supporting the University’s critical education mission by providing consistent, high-quality instructional support. The individual will assist faculty and teaching staff in the preparation and delivery of course materials, support classroom and laboratory activities, and contribute to the effective assessment of student learning. By ensuring smooth course operations and enhancing the learning experience, this position helps maintain the University's commitment to academic excellence and student success.

Job Description

100% - Course Support and Instruction
  • Assist a biology professor or graduate teaching assistant with all aspects of course delivery and instruction.
  • Prepare and organize laboratory materials, equipment, and supplies for laboratory activities and demonstrations.
  • Support classroom presentations and instructional activities to enhance student learning.
  • Proctor examinations and assist with maintaining a secure and productive testing environment.
  • Grade laboratory reports, quizzes, and other course assignments in accordance with instructor guidelines.
  • Provide administrative and logistical support related to course operations as needed.
  • Under the supervision of the Lab Director, independently instruct small laboratory sections for non-major students, facilitating lab activities and reinforcing course concepts.
  • Serve as a resource for students by answering questions and providing guidance related to laboratory procedures and course content.

Required Qualifications

  1. Declared major in Biology, a related science field, or Education, as indicated in the application materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. At least junior standing (or higher) at the time of employment, as indicated in application materials.
  2. Earned a grade of "A" in the biology course(s) relevant to the lab(s) being taught, as indicated in application materials.
  3. Student must be in good academic standing, as indicated in application materials.
  4. Preference given to students eligible for Federal Work-Study funding.

Position Requirements

During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Employment Conditions

(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
