CEAE Undergraduate Student Teaching Fellow


Position Overview

School of Engineering Undergraduate Teaching Fellows (UGTFs) at the University of Kansas will support faculty instructors with active student engagement in undergraduate engineering courses. Undergraduate Teaching Fellows will guide student learning by interacting with students in remote and/or in-person format(s) as students work through problem sets or other activities. Unlike Teaching Assistants and Graders, this position does not involve grading assignments or maintaining typical office hours; however, time outside the regular class periods will be required to meet with the instructor and possibly to facilitate help sessions. The School of Engineering is looking for applicants to fill a number of core courses in each of the engineering disciplines.

Job Description

65% Enhance student learning by interacting with students during the class period and guiding students to maximize concept mastery.
35% Help faculty administer activities such as group work, problem-solving, etc., to improve student learning and engagement in key engineering courses.

Required Qualifications

Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through descriptions of work experience, educational experiences, and teaching/tutoring interest in cover letter; a record of relevant accomplishments and productivity addressed in a one-page resume; and overall GPA and letter grade obtained in the specified class. The required qualifications are:
  1. Must have taken the specified course or an equivalent class and earned at least a ‘B’ in the course.
  2. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  3. Demonstrated mastery of course content.
  4. The job requires physical or virtual presence in the course (approx. 3 hours/week for a 3-credit course) and may demand approx. 2 hours/week outside of the class.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Teaching/Tutoring experience in a university/college setting.
  2. Earned an ‘A’ in the course.

Position Requirements

During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Employment Conditions

(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.

  1. Candidates are strongly encouraged to talk with the instructor of the course to better understand the specific course duties and to discuss requirements for in-person class presence.
  2. Candidate’s application packet should contain an online application, a one-page cover letter explicitly identifying the course number and title and summarizing the candidate’s experiences in teaching or tutoring fellow students, and a one-page resume. It is acceptable to identify multiple courses; however, candidates will only be selected for a single course.
