Common Ground Garden Assistant
Position Overview
The Student Community Action Corps Program facilitates the engagement of KU students with various community organizations, programs, or support in community-engaged efforts. Student employees will support their partner organization and/or program with various tasks and projects while receiving monthly training and support from Center for Service Learning staff.
Common Ground was established by the City of Lawrence and Douglas County to allow community access to locally grown food, to encourage a healthy and green Lawrence ecosystem, and to grow community. The program currently has 11 sites, including orchards, gardens, and an incubator farm. Common Ground has supported numerous beginning farmers, gardeners, and community members with its fresh produce.

Job Description
- Growing Season Garden Support (65%)
- Maintaining garden beds through weeding, planting, and harvesting
- Supporting upkeep of gardens by placing cardboard, shoveling mulch, and keeping tools organized
- Off-Season Administrative Tasks (30%)*
- Data tracking and reporting
- Managing various social media accounts
- Conducting outreach to volunteers, community partners, etc.
- Other relevant duties as assigned by the site supervisor and program staff (5%)
*Hours may be reduced during off-season but made-up during gardening season
Required Qualifications
- Student employees must be Federal Work Study-eligible.
- Excellent and accurate typing skills, excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to complete projects independently with attention to detail.
- Basic experience with general office work and use of Microsoft Office programs (e.g., Excel).
- Attention to detail and ability to review and input data with accuracy.
- Adaptability and flexibility to new tasks, settings, and opportunities.
- Ability to take initiative and work both as a team and independently based on the task.
- During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments)

- Willingness to learn new skills and work in new areas to support team efforts.
