Communications Associate - Student Hourly
Position Overview
A student communication associate position is open at KU Student Affairs. A successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Director of Student Affairs Communications to create promotional materials for students, staff, community members, and families. This position will require skills in graphic design, photography, videography, and writing.
An ideal candidate will be detail-oriented and have strong skills in visual storytelling, written communication, and organization.
The Office of the Vice Provost for Student Affairs coordinates and develops student support programs and services and serves as an advocate for student needs across the university community that contributes to overall academic success. Student Affairs extends beyond the classroom. Our mission is to engage the KU community in programs and services that make learning possible.
Per the State of Kansas, student employees may hold concurrent appointments not to exceed maximum appointment and hours worked levels. However, concurrent student appointments must be of matching FLSA designation (exempt/salaried or non-exempt/hourly).
Job Description
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Assist with the planning and execution of a social media plan for the academic year- 30%
- Photograph, film, and capture events as requested by Student Affairs staff- 20%
- Draft and edit communications copy and material for student audiences- 20%
- Edit video content to be shared on various platforms- 10%
- Promote a welcoming environment for all members of the KU campus community- 10%
- Attend and participate in trainings and events- 5%
- Report work hours and complete timesheets as directed by the supervisor- 5%
Required Qualifications
- Must be in good academic standing.
- Experience and proficiency in Microsoft Office tools including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Teams.
- Website content management experience (e.g., Drupal, Word Press, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc.)
- Availability to work some nights, mornings, and weekends.
- During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficient with social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram.
- Experience reviewing analytics and using them to inform communication strategies.
- Experience working with Adobe Creative Suite.
- Familiarity with style guides and accessible web practices.
- One year of experience in written or visual storytelling, communications, graphic design, or administration.

Work Schedule
Employees will need to attend some events that may occur in the evenings and occasionally the early morning. Employees should expect to attend meetings and complete most of their work during typical workdays and times: Monday – Friday from 9am-5pm.
