GASES Student Assistant


Position Overview

The GASES Assistant will serve as the main contact for the Environmental Studies Program, and the Department of Geography & Atmospheric Science departments.

Job Description

30% - Visitor and Communication Support
  • Greet and assist visitors, ensuring a welcoming and professional environment.
  • Answer incoming phone calls, directing inquiries to appropriate staff or providing general information.
  • Assist walk-ins with questions, forms, and basic guidance.
30% - Digital and Print Media
  • Manage email correspondence, responding promptly and professionally to inquiries.
  • Create and distribute flyers for departmental events and announcements.
  • Assist with website updates, social media posts, and other digital communication tasks to promote department initiatives.
30% - General Office and Facilities Maintenance
  • Distribute incoming mail and packages to appropriate recipients.
  • Perform general physical organization tasks, such as tidying common areas or sorting supplies.
  • Assist with occasional light cleaning tasks, such as clearing out refrigerators or organizing storage areas.
10% - Other Duties as Assigned
  • Complete additional tasks as directed by supervisors to support departmental needs.

Required Qualifications

  1. Previous computer experience including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat, as indicated in application materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Major or minor in Geography, Atmospheric Science or Environmental Studies, as indicated in application materials.

Position Requirements

  1. Must be able to work 10 hours per week in intervals of 2 or more hours at a time.
  2. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Employment Conditions

(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
