Graduate Reference Specialist


Position Overview

Per the State of Kansas, student employees may hold concurrent appointments not to exceed maximum appointment and hours worked levels. However, concurrent student appointments must be of matching FLSA designation (exempt/salaried or non-exempt/hourly).

Job Description

  • 100% - Research Help Specialists provide general and in-depth research assistance to library patrons both in person and via chat at the research help desks in Watson Library and Anschutz Library.

Required Qualifications

  1. Enrolled in six credit hours of graduate coursework or at least one hour of thesis/dissertation (approval form from graduate program required).
  2. One or more years of experience using library resources for academic research, including electronic resources (databases, ebooks, etc.).
  3. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments) 

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Relevant KU Libraries work experience and/or familiarity with KU Libraries resources, spaces, and services.
  2. Public service experience and/or customer service skills.
  3. Teaching and/or training experience.
  4. Excellent communications skills.
  5. Ability to work well both individually and as part of a team.

Additional Candidate Instructions

Hours per week and weekly schedule: Work schedule may range from 6 to 20 hours per week, depending on individuals' availability and staffing needs; desk shifts are typically four-hour blocks between 9am and 5pm, though evening shifts may be available later in the semester.
