Intramural Basketball Official – Student Hourly


Position Overview

Recreation Services and the Intramural Sports program are seeking students to join our team as an Intramural Basketball Official for the spring 2025 Intramural Basketball season. The Intramural Basketball Official is responsible for providing an atmosphere of fun in a competitive, yet safe, environment. Officials must be able to implement Intramural Sports policies and sport specific rules in order to maintain an appropriate level of control, fairness, and safety. Officials should maintain a positive attitude on-site and should always be striving to improve their umpiring skills.

No prior officiating experience is needed. All training will be provided by student Supervisors prior to beginning work.

Participation in Intramural Sports by officials is encouraged!

This is a seasonal position (January through March) with the opportunity to also other sports throughout the spring 2026 semester.

Job Description

The duties of an Intramural Basketball Official include:

80% Officiating Intramural Basketball games
  • Participant check-in
  • Pre-game captain's meeting
  • Participant safety provided through the unbiased administration of rules decisions based on training for that particular sport

10% Documentation of Intramural Basketball games
  • Recording the score of each game on an IPad and on the scoreboard
  • Verification of final score of all games worked with a signature on each completed score sheet
  • Assigning an appropriate Sportsmanship Rating to each team following each game

5% Court set up

5% Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

An applicant for the position of an Intramural Basketball Official must have:
  1. Work history that required being moderately physically active for hours at a time (maximum of four hours at a time)
  2. A baseline knowledge of the sport of basketball
  3. Current NFHS Concussion In Sports Certification or willingness to obtain within the first month of employment

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred applicant for the position of an Intramural Basketball Official will have:
  1. Previous umpiring/officiating or sports participation experience as evidenced by application materials.
  2. A willingness to learn as evidenced by application materials.
  3. A professional and cooperative demeanor as evidenced by application materials.

Position Requirements

During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Employment Conditions

(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.

Additional Candidate Instructions

Review of this position occurs regularly through January 20.

Qualified applicants must have:
  • Availability to work on Sundays as evidenced in application material
  • Availability to be present and engaged at all three dates of the paid Intramural Basketball Officials Training:
    • Wednesday, January 28 from 5:00p – 8:00p; and
    • Thursday, January 29 from 5:00p – 7:00p; and
    • Tuesday, February 3 from 5:30p – 7:30p
