Intramural Slow-Pitch 3-Pitch Softball Umpire – Student Hourly POOL


Position Overview

Recreation Services and the Intramural Sports program are seeking students to join our team as an Intramural Slow-Pitch 3-Pitch Softball Umpire for the fall 2024 Slow-Pitch 3-Pitch Softball season. The Intramural Slow-Pitch 3-Pitch Softball Umpire is responsible for providing an atmosphere of fun in a competitive, yet safe, environment. Umpires must be able to implement Intramural Sports policies and sport specific rules in order to maintain an appropriate level of control, fairness, and safety. Umpires should maintain a positive attitude on-site and should always be striving to improve their umpiring skills.

No prior officiating/umpiring experience is needed. All training will be provided by student Supervisors prior to beginning work.

Participation in Intramural Sports by umpires is encouraged!

This is a seasonal position (September 23 through October 17) with the opportunity to also officiate basketball in late fall.

Job Description

The duties of an Intramural Sports Umpire include:

80% Umpiring of Slow-Pitch 3-Pitch Softball games
  • Participant check-in
  • Pre-game captain's meeting
  • Participant safety provided through the unbiased administration of rules decisions based on training for that particular sport
10% Documentation of Slow-Pitch 3-Pitch Softball games
  • Verification of final score of all games worked with a signature on each completed score sheet
  • Assigning an appropriate Sportsmanship Rating to each team following each game
5% Field set up

5% Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

An applicant for the position of an Intramural Slow-Pitch 3-Pitch Softball Umpire must have:
  • Work history that required being moderately physically active for hours at a time (maximum of four hours at a time)
  • A baseline knowledge of the sport of softball or baseball
  • Current NFHS Concussion In Sports Certification or willingness to obtain within the first month of employment
  • During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments)

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred applicant for the position of an Intramural Slow-Pitch 3-Pitch Softball Umpire will have:
  • Previous umpiring/officiating or sports participation experience
  • A willingness to learn and have fun

  • A positive and enthusiastic attitude
  • A professional and cooperative demeanor

Additional Candidate Instructions

Qualified applicants must be available to be present and engaged at the paid Intramural Slow-Pitch 3-Pitch Softball Umpire Training on Wednesday, September 18 from 5:00p – 7:30p.

Work Schedule

An Intramural Slow-Pitch 3-Pitch Softball Umpire has the flexibility to set their availability to be assigned shifts during the following work hours:

Mondays – Thursdays from approximately 4:45p – 11:15p
