Intramural Volleyball Official – Student Hourly


Position Overview

The Intramural Sports Official is responsible for providing an atmosphere of fun in a competitive, yet safe, environment. Officials must be able to implement Intramural Sports policies and sport specific rules in order to maintain an appropriate level of control, fairness, and safety. Officials should maintain a positive attitude on-site and should always be striving to improve their officiating skills.

This is a seasonal position with the opportunity to also officiate basketball in the fall semester.

Job Description

The Intramural Sports program is seeking students to join our team as an Intramural Volleyball Official for the fall 2023 Volleyball season. The official is responsible for effectively officiating the sport of volleyball and the general safety of the participants.

No prior officiating experience is needed. All training will be provided by student Supervisors prior to beginning work.

Participation in Intramural Sports by officials is encouraged!

A wide variety of skills are developed by Intramural Sports Officials which include but are not limited to:

The duties of an Intramural Sports Officials include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Accurate documentation of hours worked
  • Minor pre-game court set up
  • Pre-game captain's meeting administration
  • Unbiased administration of rules decisions based on training for that particular sport
  • Verification of final score of all games worked with a signature on each completed score sheet
  • Assigning an appropriate Sportsmanship Rating to each team following each contest
  • Assisting other officials and/or supervisors in any matters concerning Intramural Sports

Required Qualifications

An applicant for the position of an Intramural Volleyball Official must have:
  • Status as an enrolled student with at least 6 hours at The University of Kansas
  • Work history that required being moderately physically active for hours at a time (maximum of four hours at a time)
  • A baseline knowledge of the sport of volleyball
  • Current NFHS Concussion In Sports Certification or willingness to obtain within the first month of employment

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred applicant for the position of an Intramural Volleyball Official will have:
  • Previous officiating or sports participation experience
  • A willingness to learn and have fun

  • A professional and cooperative demeanor

Qualified applicants must have:
  • Availability to work on Sundays as evidenced in application material
  • Availability to be present and engaged at both dates of the paid Intramural Volleyball Officials Training:
    • Wednesday, October 18 from 5:00p – 7:30p
    • Thursday, October 19 from 6:00p – 8:00p
  • Completed onboarding and be approved to begin work by Wednesday, October 18

Advertised Salary Range

Compensation starts at $10.80/hour with opportunities for advancement

Work Schedule

An Intramural Volleyball Official is responsible for setting their availability for the following possible shift times:

Sundays from 5:00p – 8:30p or 7:15p – 10:30p
Mondays from 5:00p – 8:30p or 7:15p – 10:30p
Wednesdays from 5:00p – 8:30p or 7:15p – 10:30p
Thursdays from 5:00p – 8:30p or 7:15p – 10:30p
