Monarch Watch Communications Intern


Position Overview

Monarch Watch is an international organization based at the University of Kansas that leads education, conservation, and research programs focused on the monarch butterfly, its habitat, and its spectacular fall migration. The Communications Intern will support communications efforts for Monarch Watch, including responding to email inquiries, developing content for various communication platforms, representing Monarch Watch at events and to visitors, and assisting with other activities. The Communications Intern will gain experience with a variety of types of science writing, graphic design, and video/photography, as well as with working with Monarch Watch team members, volunteers, and partners with different backgrounds, interests, and perspectives.

Job Description

45% - Review/Revise/Develop Content
  • Review/revise and develop new content for various Monarch Watch platforms, including the website, print materials and social media.
45% - Work with the Public
  • Respond to inquires via email and phone.
  • Represent Monarch Watch at events and to visitors.
10% - Support
  • Provide support for other Monarch Watch programs and activities as needed.

Required Qualifications

  1. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be preenrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments.)
  2. Strong written and oral communication skills, as evidenced in application materials.
  3. Experience with social media platforms, such as Facebook, X, Instagram, YouTube, etc., as evidenced in application materials.
  4. Experience working independently and collaboratively as a team, as evidenced in application materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Coursework in journalism, communications, marketing, or related field, as evidenced in application materials.
  2. Coursework in biology or related field, as evidenced in application materials.
  3. Past volunteer, internship, or employment experience that involved writing, public speaking, design skills, etc., as evidenced in application materials.
  4. Experience using Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or similar, as evidenced in application materials.
  5. Interest in working with/around insects, as described in the cover letter.

Advertised Salary Range

$15.00 per hour

Work Schedule

10 - 20 hours between 8am - 5pm, Monday thru Friday, with a set weekly schedule; some weekend/evening hours may be required.
