Outdoor Pursuits Routesetter - Student Hourly


Position Overview

Individuals applying for this position should have intermediate to advanced rock-climbing capabilities and experience or knowledge in wall maintenance and route setting. In consultation with the Program Manager(s) and/or Assistant Director of Outdoor Pursuits, Route Setters will completely reset routes on the Rock and Bouldering Walls two to three times per year.

Route Setters will not set routes while the wall is open. Due to the nature of the position, Route Setters have flexibility in hours. Staff will set routes when the climbing wall is closed. Staff must be accountable and complete work within their allotted time frame. Prior knowledge and the ability to learn and create challenging and safe climbing routes are essential.

Per the State of Kansas, student employees may hold concurrent appointments not to exceed maximum appointment and hours worked levels. However, concurrent student appointments must be of matching FLSA designation (exempt/salaried or non-exempt/hourly).

Job Description

Routesetting: 80%
  • Placing Holds
  • Choosing Screw types
  • Taping marking routes
  • Rating routes
Hold Maintenance: 10%
  • Cleaning holds
  • Evaluating holds for excessive damage
Wall Maintenance: 5%
  • Checking hold holes for damage
  • Checking/evaluating quickdraws for wear and tear, loose gates, etc.

Required Qualifications

  1. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments)

Preferred Qualifications

  1. CPR/AED certification (can be completed up to 30 days after being hired).
  2. Past experience of climbing and route setting and a knowledge of climbing equipment and outdoor equipment preferred.
  3. Work Study eligible
