Outreach and Communications Assistant - Graduate Student Hourly


Position Overview

The Center of Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) is a leading research center linking faculty, students, and the community from across Kansas, the country and the world in the interdisciplinary study of the languages, histories, cultures, and societies of Latin America and the Caribbean. The graduate student hourly position is responsible for organizing and managing specific outreach and communication efforts, event planning, and support of various projects and office operations.

Job Description

Outreach and communication duties (75%)
  • Promote and help organize CLACS programs, events, projects, initiatives, and services.
  • Manage and support events, such as the Merienda Series, including soliciting and scheduling speakers, preparing promotional materials, and handling (minimal) tech needs.
  • Work at information tables for CLACS events (may include an occasional evening or weekend).
  • Promote FLAS funding and CLACS languages and services through classroom visits or other means.
  • Assist with organization of conferences and workshops.
  • Assist with communications to grant-funded project participants.
  • Serve as a CLACS representative at events, and by communicating effectively about CLACS services and programs.
  • Create content, design digital and paper flyers, print and post flyers and announcements.
Office duties (25%)
  • Research, analyze, and summarize information for CLACS needs.
  • Prepare documents, spreadsheets, and charts.
  • Maintain mailing lists.
  • Perform other duties as requested.

Required Qualifications

  1. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).
  2. Proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese.
  3. Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills, including public speaking.
  4. Demonstrated academic/intellectual interest in Latin America and/or the Caribbean.
  5. Advanced writing and proofreading skills.
  6. Experience working with graphic design programs such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) or Canva, and/or willingness to learn.
  7. Evidence of ability to work collaboratively and independently while meeting deadlines.
  8. Eligible for Federal Work Study (FWS).

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience using social media and electronic newsletters, Content Management System (CMS) for websites.
  2. Photography and photo editing skills.
  3. Basic videography and video editing skills.
  4. Multicultural and/or multilingual experience or background.
  5. Previous customer service experience.
  6. Prior academic, work, or volunteer experience with Latin American indigenous cultures and/or with Latinx / Hispanic communities in the United States.
  7. Prior academic, work, or volunteer experience with K-12 education settings, including students, teachers, para-educators, and administrators.

6 - 12 hour per week between the hours of 9 AM - 5 PM, Monday thru Friday
