Peer Financial Coach - Student Hourly


Position Overview

Jayhawk Finances empowers KU students with the financial knowledge and skills needed to achieve lifelong financial stability and success. Jayhawk Finances is launching a Peer Financial Coach program dedicated to supporting students and providing a friendly connection to talk about money.

We are seeking enthusiastic and motivated college students to join our team as a Peer Financial Coach. This part-time role is designed for current college students who are passionate about helping their peers achieve financial literacy and personal financial goals. As a Peer Financial Coach, you will support fellow students in understanding various financial topics, from budgeting and saving to investing and managing student loans.

Job Description

Peer Financial Coaches will be provided with training in various financial wellness topics that will prepare them for their role. After training, Peer Financial Coaches are responsible for providing information to their peers about topics that include, but are not limited to: creating a budget, understanding credit and debt, saving and investing, reaching financial goals, and awareness of other campus resources.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Financial Education: Provide one-on-one coaching sessions to fellow students on various financial literacy and financial wellness topics including budgeting, saving, credit management, student loans, and investing.
  • Workshops and Seminars: Assist in organizing and facilitating workshops and seminars on personal finance topics for students, classes, and student organizations.
  • Resource Development: Help create and update financial education materials and resources tailored to the needs of college students.
  • Social Media and Marketing: Contribute to the creation of social media content and marketing materials to promote financial literacy programs and resources.
  • Goal Setting: Assist students in setting and achieving their personal financial goals by developing customized action plans and providing ongoing support.
  • Peer Support: Serve as a role model and mentor, offering practical advice and encouragement to help students build healthy financial habits.
  • Confidentiality: Maintain strict confidentiality of all financial and personal information shared during coaching sessions.
  • General Office Duties: Attend weekly team meetings, answer emails, prepare and gather event/program materials, and perform other duties as assigned.
No prior personal money management experience or courses are required; all training and work will be conducted on-site. All majors are welcome to apply.

Required Qualifications

No prior personal money management experience or courses are required; all training and work will be conducted on-site at the KU - Lawrence Campus. All majors are welcome to apply.
  1. Application Materials: Must submit a resume AND a typed statement that includes why you are interested in the role.
  2. Current Enrollment: Must meet KU minimum enrollment requirement of 6 credit hours for student employment. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).
  3. Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts in an understandable way. Must be comfortable with public speaking and presenting in front of large groups.
  4. Interpersonal Skills: Ability to build rapport and maintain positive relationships with peers from diverse backgrounds.
  5. Organizational Skills: Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities effectively.
  6. Proactive Attitude: A self-starter with a proactive approach to problem-solving and a genuine interest in helping others achieve financial success.
  7. Confidentiality: Commitment to maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of student information.
  8. Availability: Estimated weekly commitment of 10-15 hours per week, based on availability. Our office is open from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., therefore we require that Peer Financial Coaches are available to work during hours that fall within that timeframe. There will be occasional evening or weekend hours required for presentations or events. Work schedules will be determined based on your availability in-between classes and other academic/personal obligations.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Federal Work Study Eligible: Applicants who are eligible for federal work study through the FAFSA are preferred.
  2. Social Media Skills: Experience with social media platforms and basic graphic design or marketing skills are desirable.
  3. Experience: Previous experience in tutoring or peer mentoring is a plus.
  4. Relevant Interests: Personal interest in and understanding of money management topics, or completion of KU FIN 101-Personal Finance course or similar course.

Advertised Salary Range

$12.00 per hour

Work Schedule

10 - 15 hours per week between the hours of 8am - 5pm, Monday thru Friday; occasional evening and weekend hours will a requirement for presentations and/or events.
