Peer Health Education Coordinator


Position Overview

The Health Education Resource Office (HERO) is a source for KU student wellness through partnerships that support innovative approaches toward optimal health while maximizing academic and professional success.

This student peer health education position is to collaborate with the Health Educators to plan and implement various health-related programs and events, prepare kits and arrange for other promo items, and staff numerous activities.

The incumbent in this position will see, hear, and possibly have access to confidential information that must be handled in accordance with all relevant state and federal laws and university policies and procedures regarding its use and disclosure.

HERO utilizes computer technology in all aspects of its operations. The incumbent must become familiar with and be able to use the appropriate computer hardware and software programs associated with this position.

The incumbent must become familiar with and adhere to the Watkins Health Center Customer Experience Plan to ensure appropriate interaction and positive outcomes with both internal and external customers.

Per the State of Kansas, student employees may hold concurrent appointments not to exceed maximum appointment and hours worked levels. However, concurrent student appointments must be of matching FLSA designation (exempt/salaried or non-exempt/hourly).

Job Description

  • 20% - Assist the Health Educators in planning and implementing various health-related programs and events.
  • 20% - Contribute to planning, implementing, staffing, etc. of signature events, such as Wellness Fair, Sex in the Dark, Pause 4 Pups, and Stress Busting Study Breaks.
  • 15% - Organize Peer Health Education Ambassadors and communicate pertinent information needed for volunteer duties.
  • 15% - Communicate accurate health information at in-person events, via email communication, on social media, or through presentations.
  • 15% - Hold regular office hours as well as attend activities and events.
  • 15% - Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  1. Availability to work in 3-hour blocks of time.
  2. Possess excellent organization and leadership skills.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively in a variety of settings.
  4. Submit a resume and cover letter.
  5. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate level student.
  2. Work study eligible.
  3. Experience in health education.
  4. Knowledge of medical/health terminology.
  5. Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and other graphic design software.

Advertised Salary Range

$10.25 per hour
